Anything decent made by World. Ibanez SGRs used can be cheap and serious performers. I got what appears to be a World made fender squire 5 string for peanuts and it’s excellent. Feels nothing like a piece of shit fender

First post, long-time bassist, glad to be here.

I own 4 Squier P basses, of various kinds, from the Affinity PJ in black and charcoal mist, the Classic Vibe 60's model I made to be a tribute to my first good bass back in 1975 (1972 Fender Precision sunburst with tortoise pickguard), and a white 70's Modified Squier that was further modified with a EMG GZR-P pickup gifted to me by Terry Welty (Geezer Butler's longtime tech and product designer). With good setups, and even the stock pickups, ranging from $279 to $479, they all play nice and sound great. I'm a firm believer in the premise that your amp is your sound, along with your pedals. I've had 'em all from Alembic to Chinese Tempo over my 50+ years as a bassist and a product specialist, and I stand by the fact that as long as you're not fighting the bass, and your amp's straight, you're good. Thousands of gigs later, that works for me. Here's 3 of them, all but the Charcoal Mist PJ.

2 years later and we’re still having fun with the Bronco! Put a new pickup in, strung up with flatwounds (damn strings cost almost half what the bass cost (price is nearly $100 more now for the dang bass than what I paid on sale in ‘23).

Nice!

Two years later and I still haven’t changed the strings on either bass :ROFLMAO:

aint nobody got time for that GIF
I tend to leave strings on far too long cuz I hate changing them. But ever since eagle said that old strings contribute to fret wear, I'm going to try harder. Strings being easier to replace than frets.

Reason I tend to think he's right (in this case) is that my 1st Majesty, the Enchanted Forest I bought in 2019, is showing serious fret wear. And even though I have played the shit out of it, I've also been bad about changing the strings, once the new-ness wore off (the guitar, lol)

I need a new instrument like a hole in the head, but tracking bass with a guitar is disgusting. Thinking of grabbing a super cheap bass just for recording.

I’m assuming something like a Squire Precision bass is logical for this purpose, but just curious if there is another cheap bass worth considering that can cover most genres.
Forget the bass.
Using a decent octave pedal & plug ins (or an SVT Sans Amp for analog guys) will get you by, and your intonation will be closer if you use the same guitar you tracked with.
Its probably cheaper too.

I did this whole record that way:
