Boss GK-5

@mbenigni Let me lay it out...
My original posting was about ditching my acoustic for a system that could recreate a reasonable acoustic sound.
I play in a multitude of alternate tunings and practicing them has become a burden. Constantly changing from one tuning to another, the stress being placed on the instrument and the strings. I'm getting old and my fingers hurt and an electric guitar is just easier on them.
I am looking for a system to allow me the flexibility to change tunings on-the-fly and emulate an acoustic sound reasonably well.

I started with the Line-6 Variax connected to the Helix and this checked all my boxes, but found that the Variax is no longer in production so this was a non-starter.

That lead me to Boss and this forum.
As some suggested, the GP-10, now 11 years old, connected to a GK-3, would allow me to do exactly what I needed. However, the age and advances in technology were con's. Looking at the GP-10, I felt it didn't have enough 'tech' to allow me the ability shape the acoustic tone and the newer offerings have so much more 'tech' to help me achieve a better sound.

The new GK-5 with it's TRS cable is an excellent upgrade. It has it's flaws but does serve to connect the instrument to the processor.
The next thing was what to connect it to. So their was some discussion/education on the VG-800, GM-800, SY-1000 processors. Clearly, I know nothing about them and needed some education. So finally I arrived at the VG-800. It checks all the boxes and has so much extra 'stuff' that it'll keep me entertained for many years to come. I will be able to manipulate the sound and I hope to achieve a reasonable acoustic emulation. I will be able to change tunings with a flip of the switch and be able to practice them. I will have a plethora of effects to apply AND have an electric guitar to make loud noise with when I get bored and want to annoy the neighbors.

I think that sums things up and hope I was able to explain my goals a bit better.

Gotcha, and I can relate to a lot of this. The need to play in various tunings is an ongoing challenge for me, and I've tried a variety of products in hopes of eliminating the need for multiple guitars. (I'm getting older too, and although playing an acoustic guitar is still fine for me, I don't like carrying three guitars if carrying one is option. :D)

Anyway it's worth considering a couple of things:

-Playing a guitar that's physically tuned to one tuning and electronically detuned to another is always a compromise. At low volumes, you'll be able to hear the physical tuning acoustically, which is dissonant and distracting. This is improved with headphones and/or increased volume, but the instrument will still resonate differently than one that's been physically tuned to the desired "target" tuning. You said you "started" with Variax, but I don't know if you mean this was the first purchase you considered, or whether you've actually owned one before. If you've never played a guitar with electronically altered tuning before, try before you buy so you're not disappointed.

-Regarding "newer offerings have so much more 'tech' to help me achieve a better sound": This is a personal decision, and I don't fault anyone for wanting "latest and greatest". I agree that the GK5 with TRS cable is a much more elegant (indeed overdue) solution vs. the GK3 with 13-pin cable. However, I wouldn't put too much stock in newer Roland processors offering "more tech". You should always consider whether newer features or specs are actually relevant to your own use case. This is especially true with BOSS/ Roland, where newer products are often more of a "crossgrade" than an upgrade, i.e. two steps forward, one step back. (If you're lucky.)

I'm just speaking in general terms here. I'm not actually familiar enough with the VG800 (yet) to get into any specifics. Either way, if you can afford one, I'm sure you'll have a ton of fun with it. :)

@mbenigni Thanks for your thoughts

- Yes... the subtle distraction of what you 'feel' in the instrument vs the sound that comes out of the amp will need some getting used to. Feeling that resonance is part of the connection I/we get when playing an acoustic. I'll be playing it through a small 30w Blackstar but will shift to something like the Line-6 L2 when the funds become available, so it should be 'loud' enough to drown out the true string resonance. As you said ...'Compromise'
The Variax was the first thing I considered and have never played one. It's a moot point though.

- When I refer to 'tech' I mean more ways to shape the sound. I think the ability to also layer the sound will help enhance it to a certain degree.

- I WISH there were folks near me who are using the Boss products and I could listen and play with and see if it really fits the bill.
Hearing is believing.

At the end of the day I have to first sell my acoustic to give me the funds to make any other purchases. My wife wont have it any other way LOL.
I have serious reservations about giving up my Taylor... it's just soooo nice and it took me a long time to gather the funds to make the purchase.

Thanks so much for taking the time to respond.

Yours In Music,
-Matt-
