Boss DM101 incoming

OMG. I've been wanting a DM-101 since they came out, but I've so far managed to resist the GAS.

This. Does. Not. Help! :hmm

Nevertheless...

I'm v. excited to hear what you think if it.

I'll keep you posted for sure! I like the delay time and the modulation (which gives me a false sense of two pedals for the price of 4 vibe). Basically I am creating an all analog version of the Axe III where I plug in and just start riffing with sounds at my feet I love and not a lot of menu diving/tweaking bullshart.

I think :bag

Boo! Not even isolated pedal power?

Nope, fucking thing won’t even power on. This is with a VL Pedal Power 3, which has plenty of current for the job. It had me scratching my head until I researched it. The pedal is worth the inconvenience of the wall wart, though. I still love mine.

Odd. That stinks! In my case, I'm going to use it here at home with the wall wart so not a deal breaker if I like it.

@JiveTurkey It does seem odd, but I do wonder if there's a good reason here.

I notice on the back of the unit there's a earthing screw too. I wonder if Boss is super worried about the sensitive and easily damaged BBD chips in the device. Perhaps they're doing their very best to control the power to ensure that the unit is not easily damaged.

Case in point: the BBDs in my Nano Deluxe Memory Man got fried and I think it may have been due to a static discharge when I was changing patch cables. 🤔

Regardless, it's the only pedal I've ever had fail.

Why It Only Works with the Supplied Wall Wart

  1. Voltage Drop Under Load
The DM-101 draws a full 300mA at 9V, but many aftermarket supplies rated at 300–500mA sag below 9V under real-world use. Boss pedals are notoriously sensitive to voltage dips, and the DM-101 has digital circuitry that likely trips an internal safety threshold if it's not exactly 9V or stable.

Update: just tested both the delays with a Voodoo lab Digital, and both worked fine. But I did have an issue with one of them, must have been the PP2 that wasn’t playing nicely with one of them. But I distinctly recall that one of them wouldn’t work on my board at the time. It was a while ago though, so I don’t remember which pedal and which power supply I was fighting with at the time.

Edit to add that the only thing I was running off the power supply for my test was the one pedal.

That makes sense. I haven't graduated to a dedicated power supply, any way; for a home bound board but we'll see sooner probably rather than later :sofa

My test was basically putting both pedals on the floor, then powering them individually with the loose Pedal Power Digital (400mA outputs) that I had stashed with all of my pedals. I think I’ll repeat the test with my full board, which has a Pedal Power 3 under it.

Just tried it on the board I have right now, and both worked fine again. However, this is a very minimalist board with only low current analog pedals on it, so I’m thinking the issues I ran into before had something to do with having a couple H9s and an Eventide Space on the old board, so it’s possible that there was a voltage drop from the power supply that the BOSS pedal didn’t like. But that shouldn’t be an issue with modern power supplies you would think…

Thanks for checking!

Most I'll ever have on this board would be a wah, small pile of boosts, this delay and maybe another modulation? We'll see how it pans out once it arrives \m/
