At what point do you say -- enough is enough..

I get that. Amp gain is cool, and maybe it's why I'm more drawn to the tube gain pedals in general. I've just always been more of a clean base tone/pedal guy since I started. I've grown more into liking eob base tones though, and just taking it further with a pedal. Fuzz is a different beast entirely. It's that thing... and you can only get that thing from a pedal (or a vintage amp that's about to explode lol).

That’s where I have landed as well. I picked up a Friedman Twin Sister about a month ago, and even though it has more than enough gain to handle anything I would do it just LOVES drive pedals. My base tone is essentially AC/DC, which is what the Friedman was made to do.

I need to fire up my Runt 20, it's been a minute!
Yep, the perfect breakup tone to me is like a BF Bassman or tweed Bassman/JTM45 thing. They love pedals too.

I have gotten over my anti-distortion/boost pedal thing. I used to be a proper amp-only purist, but honestly the right boost, overdrive, or distortion, can completely bring a lifeless amp into its own. So I say, really you need one or two flavours of each family group. A TS, a Klon, an SD1, and maybe a RAT .... although I'm still heavily mired in anti-RAT prejudice!

For drive/fuzz pedals, I own:
  • DIY Browne Protein. It's actually two pedals - the ODR-1 and Bluesbreaker sides as separate boxes.
  • DIY Hudson Broadcast.
  • Bozz FZ-1W fuzz.
  • Strymon Compadre (boost/overdrive + compressor)
  • Strymon Riverside
The Strymons are actually what's on my board. The Riverside does so much alone that I could use that as my one and only drive pedal for pretty much anything.

I find that I'm pretty much an amp gain guy. All my amps do a lot without any pedal. It's still fun to sometimes explore those pedal sounds.

Delay and reverb are the only other effects that I own in multiples. Strymon El Cap V2, Volante, Flint V2, and Source Audio Collider.

I feel like every year my "I really need this" selection grows smaller.

Out of all the drives in the FM9 i still only use just a few Mostly classics like SD1, TS, Rat, OCD and Klon, plenty for me

:grin

How does actual Klon clones work with downtuned or seven stringed guitar? Keen on getting one but I get stuck if I need one with EQ controls to reduce bass or not.

I just have a Precision Drive and a Wampler Euphoria as ODs. I kinda want to be a just amp gain-kind of guy but I really like a boost in front on subtle settings.

My pedalboard build and rework station ...
