DOD 250 / Distortion+ Comparison

I spent some time going back and forth between these two with both my LP and my Strat, and did a few sound comparison recordings.

They are very similar and you can tell the circuit is almost the same, but there are some distinct differences. The 250 feels softer and rounder overall. The Distortion+ is fuzzier, but it’s also a bit more focused and has more cut in the mix. It seems to clip much earlier and pushes the clipping harder. The 250 has quite a bit more volume, it can boost more than the D+.

Here’s a sound clip of the two with my LP. The 250 is the first time through and the Distortion+ is the second. The AC30 is set with just a little hair on it, the rest of the drive is the pedal pushing it. The 250 is in Germanium setting for the first lead break and silicon for the melody and end lead break. I started having fun and got a little carried away with the recording, but I like it :LOL:

LP -> 250/D+ -> SCF -> Carbon Copy -> AC30

Second sound clip is with my Strat. Again, first time through is the 250 and the Distortion+ is second. AC30 set to a similar gain level as the first, most of the gain coming from the pedal. I added a comp in front for this one.

Strat -> DynaComp -> 250/D+ -> Carbon Copy -> AC30

One interesting thing I noticed when recording these was that the Distortion+ sometimes didn’t feel good when I was playing, and I thought it was going to sound bad, but when I listened back it sat really nicely in the mix!

Some of the sounds in those clips are fuzzier than I would like, and if this wasn’t a demo of these two pedals I would’ve definitely chosen something different. They definitely have a vibe, and a bit of old school flare to them. The D+ especially has a lot of fuzz qualities to it. Tone-wise the way it reads I would probably use it in the same places I would use a fuzz. It’s like a fuzz with better definition.

They both surprised me and I like them a lot more than I expected. I think I lean towards liking the D+ best with the LP and the 250 with the Strat. The Strat recording is a great example of gear being more versatile than what it’s famous for. That’s a Strat with an hs-3 into a grey 250 and Neo-classical shred didn’t burst out once!

Yep, the germanium diodes in the D+ clip earlier and that reduces output of the pedal.

I just realized I forgot to credit the songs.

The LP one is a bit of the opening number from The Wedding Singer musical. The Strat one is a little Gary Allen
