Are 4x12 cabs really that good?

I have 2 OS Mesa cabs with V30s and two Vader cabs with a mix of V30s and DV77s in the first one and DV77s and Creambacks in the 2nd.

I trust the guy that recommended the 2nd mix, and it’s all I play anymore. It’s fuckin sublime.

I’m gonna sell all my other cabs.
 
I remember finding a broken-in Yamaha 4X12 at a pawn shop around ‘96. I think I paid $140. I was younger then and weight wasn’t a terrible concern. I clearly remember playing it the first time. It sounded glorious to me totally stock. It was stunning and addictive.

It’s long gone and missed but I still keep a 4X12 at home in the living room…. Ready to go when the urge hits. It never moves so that’s nice.
 
The last 4x12 I bought was a mint Krank Revolution cab last year for $250. I took the stock speakers out (not a huge fan of Legends) and rewired it as two 2x12s. I run one side with an Eminence Wizard/Governor mix and the other side with a V30/EVM-12L. I had two 2x12s before - a Port City and a Laney IRT. Both cool cabs, but the 4x12 is oversized and sounds massive. Been thinking about selling my 1x12 and buying another 4x12 so I can have 3, since I keep seeing them so cheap used. I have the space and just picked up a tiny little 2x6" cab I can use for jamming with other people, or my EVH combo, so I might as well. Love the 1x12, but I'm sure I'd love another 4x12 more!
 
Everyone has to experience 4x12 cabs in their guitar journey, if only to settle with a more practical sized cab.
It's the 'experience' that counts and I'm having fun every idiotic step I take in my gas journey.:rofl
 
I slowly progressed to a 4x12. I tried to convince myself for a while that I didn’t need a large cab, but kept trying to make my shallow 2x12 sound bigger with different combinations of Celestions.

In the end, I needed a 14” depth cab to get the low end to sound right to me in the room and under a mic.

I bought a plywood Spider Valve 4x12 for cheap and loaded it up with various Celestions I had. At this moment in my guitar playing journey, I want to hear a high gain amp through a 4x12.
 
Ok what about favourite 4x12 because that vary quite a lot.
Mine is a vintage all ply Marshall from no newer than around 72. Newer are still good but the best ones I have played are all older.
For compleat my favourite 2x 12 is a recto and my favourite 1x12 is an EV Thiele.
 
I go back and forth with my current rig. Do I get another Recto 2x12 for stereo with axe fx3 and LX-II or get a 4x12 Trad straight Recto?

Indeed - called 'Split Back' as the upper speaker(s) are open back, bottom are closed back.
