4x12 Comeback?

Yes — nothing like the feel of a 4x12 behind you. But man, carrying one around is brutal.
That’s actually why we built the Quasar 1x12: smaller, lighter, but still delivers proper bass response.
Happy to share more if anyone’s curious: www.rawrawk.com

i still use my 4-12 vox ad4-12 stereo cab with neos in it....i do want to get same cab in 2-12 format but hard to find and overpriced cause its smaller but i dont gig so no worries..Its heavy as f

i love quiet stages, i really dont want to hear anything else but the drums :idk if i could plug into my iphone and go right to FOH with just a little guitar in my monitor, not have to deal with loading in heavy 4x12 and tube amps which are probably gonna blow up mid song, im cool lol.
I absolutely cannot get on board with this. The magic of live music is that it’s happening now, organically. Plugging into iPhones, not hearing music on stage, etc., is just artificial as hell and not what I’m into at all.

I think he was kidding :grin

I finally discovered the magic of a good 2x12 cabinet. It's basically the same size as my oversized 1x12 and sounds 10x better.
Which one is that? I personally prefer open-back 2x12's to closed 4x12's by a long shot. Not saying 4x12's are bad, to be clear - probably a matter of taste and use case/scenario.

i mean maybe i was exaggerating a little, but not really. I said in my OP i get my fix of volume at practice, or the unmic'd VFW's and small bars metal and hardcore bands have to play around here, which i would always be rolling in with a full stack.. at the big clubs with a 10000w PA and pro sound guys running them, i would ask them how much volume they wanted to sound the best for the audience and it was always moderate at most, which is fine with me, when i record i want to barely hear my guitars to lock in with the drums, and live is the same way. would i still roll in with a half stack at least just for the look? sure, but id hook up my iphone to the pa and throw it on top of my head lol, and be able to check my snapchat between songs.

Mine is a Marshall 1922 with G12T-75's. With my SC20H, Stomp XL, & P90 guitar, there really isnt much it cant do and plenty loud. I keep mine at our practice shed at the drummers house. I asked them if I could bring a 412 sometime, but the band mates said no way due to size of our practice area. Plus, as the rhythm player I want to blend in vs stand out too much. We are planning to do a few outdoor gigs in the fall and I just put 4 g12T-75's in one of my 412's. I cant wait to open it up and let that baby breathe.

Getting back to the OP, IMO, another reason 412's seem to be more prevalent is the price of what you can pick these things up on FBMP. I picked up a Marshall 412 for $50. Yes it was the MG with shitty particle/chipped pressed wood and also had shitty speakers when I got it, but being a little smaller, it sounds great now the the G12T's in it. BTW, I picked up 4 of those on FBMP shipped to my door for $150.

It seems right now, there is so much gear out there at very reasonable prices if you look for it. 1960 cabs are all over the place between $350-$500, yes there are a few still trying to get much more but those are sitting if they are over $500.

412 is my regular gig rig.

These days I mostly use vintage sounding 1X12/2X12s loaded with alnico drivers, but in certain situations only a Celestion powered 4X12 will do!

At one time I had 1/2 dozen, but sold off all except:

(1) Flag Audio 4X12 sealed, front loader with 13 ply & Greenbacks (my favorite "character" cab of all time).

(2) Mills Afterburner I bought before Dave started using el cheapo components (Actually prefer it when cranking my VHT D120 with a VHT Fat Bottom).

You ain't lived until you've had your pants flap on stage standing in front of a roaring 4X12 :clint

Back in the day my old band had 3 Marshall full stacks, whether we played college halls, clubs or small bars.
Thats why I now have tinnitus.
But, hell, it was fun. 🤣
