All Things ENGL!

Do you like OG 5150s? For that sound; oof! Engl kinda always struck me as sort of German Peavey with some much classier upper tier models.

Yup. I'd take a Block Letter 5150 every day over a 5153. Stupidly sold mine for like $500
2 years before Edward passed. :brick

Told you I wasn't all that smart. :facepalm

Ha! Ninja’d on the euro peavey comparison lol

That said, I feel like 5150s have a certain prominent mid range frequency not found in most Engl offerings

Always wanted a Fireball but never pursued one. Now thst @Mongillo19 broke the seal though; :rofl

Thisssss

I am Fireball immune after already owning one.

TBH I‘m not the biggest fan of the Fireball. In fact it‘s my least favorite ENGL amp of the ones I tried. I just don’t like the low end. It‘s huge, but it has a very compressed, woofy, non-punchy character. And the low mids can quickly become quite bloated. Funnily enough, I preferred the Helix model to the real amp.

And to address the Artist Edition‘s supposed marshallness again… While it's true that it has a little bit of added British DNA compared to other ENGLs, that comparison only applies to the generation of amps from which it derives, and those were scooped like hell, earning ENGL a reputation for sounding sterile and cold. Anyone who thinks this is some kind of German Plexi or JCM800 is dead wrong. If you want to play Back in Black by AC/DC, look elsewhere. But if it's the sound of Sepultura’s Arise you're after - buy it now!

It's super intriguing to me that they can nail the Metal thing, and
then there are cats like Ritchie Blackmore and Steve Morse with
Signature heads. :idk

I really need to find a store where I can go play some in person.
A lot of these old school guys are forward thinkers. Guys like Beck, Blackmore, Morse, Eddie etc They used the plexis back in the day because that's what was available.. but they were always pushing the limits of the amps.
So when they had the chance to design something modern they jumped on it.
It's no wonder these guys were pioneers, they were never tied to tradition, quite the opposite.

Kind of yes although I would say more like the origin of the 5150 the Soldano ,

The Engl ( depending on model) kind of has a cross between a Mesa MK and a Marshall
It had the tightness and attack and saturation of a Mesa style amp but at the same time remains in the British camp

It has that Euro metal sound which to me is Soldano / Hot British but less plexi more like an 800 / Jubilee / JVM

Based on your love for the Mesa s JVM and more modern Marshall’s I think you would live some of the Engls

Sorry 😢 💵💵💵💵💰

Yeah that's what I am afraid of  :ROFLMAO:

If used prices are anything like in the EU…damage is minimal.
I’ve seen the 50w combos under 300,-…I got my 2x50 poweramp for 200,-
It’s silly…seems like HQ amps to me.
I don't even know which one I'd go for. I'm too susceptible to the face meters which don't necessarily serve the band best interest for working stuff :D

Would love to try the original Savage, still. Got the chance to A/B my 60 MK2 with the 120 Mk2 the other day and, the 120 is definitely cool but I'm just not a fan of KT88s. They always make amps sound cold and weird in the mids to me. The 60 sounds way more alive. The 120 is killer for modern metal but the 60 was almost as good there and way better on literally every other tone in the amp IMO. Weird that you don't see people with the 60s much. I assume it's because Engl only priced them $100 different from each other, but I also understand why people don't ever care about 3/4 of the channels on the 120.

I fuck with KT88s hard, i kind of assumed that was in all savages… what does the 60 rock?

My only Engl experience is my Fireball 25. I bought it for the saturated modern metal chugga chugged thing, but it’s really super versatile and can cover just about anything. The clean channel is freaking killer, which I totally did not expect. I’m usually not a fan of amps that have a shared eq for both channels, but the voicings work well together and it never feels like a compromise.
I second all of this. I love the clean channel and end up doing ambient noodling half of the times I thought I was gonna practice some high gain stuff. Together with my Pentatone EQ in the loop it’s easy to shape the sound for me. I’m constantly trying to dial in the nice high gain amps on my HX Stomp to try to rationalize away the Fireball 25 but it’s just really, really good even when running it with the internal load and line out into IRs.

Really grateful for the Fireball 100 model in Helix since that showed me how great these amps are.

Played a Fireball briefly at Motor City Guitar years ago and it definitely did not suck. If you’re looking high gain aggression with a more German flavor, it’s hard to beat.

Already commented on previously owning a Fireball in this thread a couple of times.

Thanks! :cheers
