4x12

If you get one you will end up with more 4X12's!

You're right and you did the right thing.

Now that in my new house I've got space for my stuff I might end up buying too much cabs.

I picked up a Mesa OS 412 about a month ago for a great price. My JCA100HDM hit 128db with ease... then I questioned how in the world I could stand in front of two 412s and a JCM900 cranked to 9 for hours on end in my 20s... lol. Such an awesome experience and great tone, but might be a bit much for a home studio set up. Maybe...

I used a 4x12 with G12T-75s with a 100w head and carted them around in my Scion tC. I eventually added a 2x12 with V30s to the mix. It still all fit into the back with seats folded down, pedalboard and guitar.

I loathed moving that stuff around and probably won't go back to a 4x12, maybe a 2x12..

No I don't. I've gigged with 2x12 and never accepted the comprise. I endured the discomfort.

My dilemma is a 4x12 is never going to leave the house with the transportation I have and a good 2x12 (Engl E212VHB) is more versatile and manageable for my specific needs.
The Engl 2x12 is front loaded and has a Mono/L/R switch, so I can easily swap speakers and switch between the two independently, it has removable metal grille, plus it has superb build quality and materials, very tempted.

Truth is you can live with with a good 2x12 (and I bet the ENGL sounds great) but is not the same. Maybe an oversized 2x12, like the mesa ones will do but they are so big and heavy I'd use a 4x12.
I've sold my 4x12 engl because I was tired of loading the cab in my car, was heavy as hell. 49kg IIRC, and was difficult to put that monster in and out.
Now I have a different car with easier access and that makes a big difference, imho. Once the cab is on the ground on its wheels you're ok,

Therefore....my suggestion is to buy a 4x12 and a new car :ROFLMAO:

Is that an old Carvin 4x12, or is that the red Peavey badge in the center? I used to have an old Carvin cab with a metal grille that looked just like that. Thing was f*ckin’ loud in comparison to the other 4x12 I had at the time, a Legacy 4x12 with Greenbacks.

Anyone likes 2x12 instead of 4x12 and accepts the sound compromise of the 2x12?
2x12 fits in a sedan but to mobilize a 4x12 you I a truck.

Yeah, I’m using two 2x12’s right now. The old Mesa 2x12 with Black Shadows in it can wipe the floor with most 4x12’s. My buddy has some 2x12 cab that was made in Miami he put some EV12L’s into and that’s just on another level of ‘holy sh*t’. It’s a little deeper than a standard 2x12 and it’s just silly loud. I couldn’t imagine a 4x12 with EV12L’s in it.

I think the biggest thing I noticed is that the cab construction doesn’t seem to have as profound of an effect on a 2x12 as it does a 4x12. I’ve swapped speakers around in mine and they’re both different sized cabs, but there wasn’t a big noticeable change aside from the differences between a closed/open back you’d expect to hear.

I'm in the process of adding another 4x12 and 2x12 to my collection. I'm spec'ing a couple custom cabs with Jeff Swanson, here in Greater Boston. In general, I'm tearing up my current collection and speaker deployment and rearranging to try new things.

My (work in progress) spreadsheet for those interested.

Always happy to see another New Englander around! I’m in Florida now, but grew up in Maine, lived in NH and Mass, spent 5 years in South Shore Mass, Rockland/Hull/Weymouth area.
