Celestion Classic Lead 80

I don't mind V30s in certain circumstances. I just think they have a very heavy footprint,
and are not as friendly of a speaker as others are. They don't play well with every tone.
They can be rude and obnoxious, overly aggressive in the upper mids and a little sizzly.

Sometimes you just want/need to sit in a mix, and not always cut in a mix. :idk

V30 is like that friend who doesn't stop talking, and when he or she does, and you start to
say something they go, "That's so rude! I wasn't done yet."

I never changed a speaker in my life til just a few weeks ago. I feel empowered but I’m also pretty well satisfied with all I got going on at the moment…

Curious to see what I think about V30s in 2024 once I receive the Mesa

V30s are like, "I am the Metallica Black Album!!!"

Honestly, it was how well they worked with the Electra Dyne. Really made it the amp for me, for the past 7 years.

Not sure if they will gel so well with the Mark VII?

Isn't that an EV or a Fane?? :idk

I do applaud the V30 truth. One day everyone will realize it. :rofl
:giggle:

Not sure what you mean by "... isn't THAT ...".
I've never had the opportunity to try a EV12 or any Fane speakers. Both are more on the expensive side here in Germany, and concerning the EV12 I do absolutely dislike the weight :giggle:
I sometimes find me having a weak spot for the Fane F90, also since Steven Fryette has a strong and obvious affinity to Hiwatt, which have always been associated with Fane speakers. But to me the F90 seems more up to my alley, than the F70. Also the Lichtlaerm/Fane LCFR150 sounds tempting.

CL80=the speaker of many a forum thread singing its praises. but never any audio showing how good it sounds.

Let’s hear it ripping faces
This is true! My decision to try CL80s was exclusivley based on forum praises rather than audio samples. I wasn't able to find any decent sounding (let alone really good sounding!) samples. After I started using and loving them, from hearing them in the room I was kinda afraid, that they wouldn't record well. But we had a band live recording in an empty rock club a few months after I switched to CL80s, and the engineer was quite satisfied, and said, he needed to do almost nothing EQ-wise.

Do you have any samples? Ideally isolated & mixed :ninja:

No isolated tracks, sorry. But in those two songs I start (red guitar), and this is as isolated as it gets. I think it was just a SM57. Amp was my Fryette Deliverance 60 clone in more mode, the guitar is a EBMM Axis Sport with its stock bridge pickup.
I have no idea what was done in mastering, because the overall sound is rather fat/modern.

Sorry for the confusion. You said the Classic Lead 80 was clean and didn't distort/sizzle/breakup
like most every other Celestion does in one way or another. EVs and Fanes are known for being
high-wattage, hi fidelity, and very clean. :idk

Of course, that usually means big magnets and a lot of weight like you mention.

Ah, understand :giggle:

Well I'm no speaker expert, but (apart from Neodymium) magnets do not necessarily have to be huge and thus heavy, to having a speaker that does not begin to compress/distort/fart under volume. There's more parameters to be taken into account (voice coil, voice coil former, doping, dust cap, spider, cooling of voice coil, ...). Best and most prominent example is a V30, it HAS an H(eavy) magnet, and at least to MY ears, sounds like shit even at band practise volumes (I actually DO like them very much at bedroom volume).

I have two Fryette/VHT/Eminence P50e's which have a medium size magnet at best, and they stay cleaner under volume, than a V30 does. Its 50W rating may also be more conservative, than the 60W rating of the V30. If you would consider "staying clean" (low or at least non audible THD) as a parameter to determine the rating of a V30, it would rather be like 30W or so.

I recently pulled mine out of my 412 to try out my K100s again but have had CL80s in my Ultra Lead cab for a few years now and they really do work well with it. I should pick up 2 more to have the whole cab filled with them rather than 2 CL80 on top and 2 K100 on the bottom though. 4 K100s also sound nice with the UL but they don't have as much midrange which you may or may not like.
