Why are guitar players so weak?

DEAD SERIOUS
"Add to Cart" serious??

Honestly; the Turdblaster is the sweet spot. But once I add outboard stuff; it isn't. So there really isn't a sweet spot when everything is taken into account. Just gotta make peace with lugging something or other.

In my minds there is 3 kinds of modelers:

1, the ones that don’t fit your gigbag or studio desk…those should be able to do everything you can think of, in any scenario, and a shitload of connectivity.
2. The ones that fit your gigbag/studio desk…those should match your usecases.
2b. Small enough to be part of a pedalboard with other stuff.

Your whole band should carry the whole band on stage though. That's the point of having bandmates beyond them actually performing their parts.

For sure. There’s one ‘rule’ I put into any band I’m in; everyone helps everyone get on and off the stage, that includes other bands.

That mostly came as a result of playing a ton of shows where you get a whopping 10 minutes to set up and do a “soundcheck”. Seems things are much more relaxed at the shows I see these days in that regard, but man, in the 90’s and 00’s you’d have a soundman on your ass that whole 10 minutes.

I've got a prototype 1x12" built by a company here on Long Island called Smith Audio. It's dual-ported (in the front of the cab on top and the rear on the bottom) and built from 12-ply voidless Birch and loaded with a Celestion G12T-75. It's an absolute monster.

It's very similar to a bass cabinet they built called a 'Bassbox.' Looks like this:

Most of the time I use an old Crate Power Block for power, but every so often I'll break out my Two Rock Studio Pro. The cab sounds great with either amp, with my FM3 running into the FX return.
Very cool. Being ported, does it stay tight or is it a little looser?

Weight is definitely a relevant factor. So is the UI. And the UX. But when those things seem to have a higher priority than the sound, you loose me.

I live in a third floor apartment, old building, very high ceilings, no elevator, and I wouldn't want to lug my Ampeg VT-22 or Fender Twin Amp up and down the stairs every time I got a gig.

No need for "FRFR", a normal 2x12 cab and separate head (or power amp) are my go-to solution, but a huge/heavy all-in-one combo, with a tiny/stiff plastic handle on top? Mehhh...

Last week, one single trip from rehearsal space to my car, I carried the following:

- guitar in soft carrying bag (straps on both shoulders)
- bass in soft carrying bag (strap on left shoulder)
- large shopping tote with a snare, bass drum pedal, and cables (left arm/elbow)
- cymbals in carrying bag (left hand)
- Katana head (right hand)

I could only walk very slowly and it probably looked awkward/quasimodo-style, but I even managed to open/lock the building's door with a key.

😂🤟

Needless to say, I'm very proud of my gear carrying skills.

I mean, playing guitar consists of plucking little metal strings fairly gently. It's not exactly inherently laborious, demanding a big manly man.

Also, never confuse TGP with guitar players more generally. We skew a little older around here.

Seriously, what is up with people? All these musicians that can’t manage to lift a 2x12 cab and have to use an ""FRFR"" that weighs the same as a bag of sugar.

You even see it with things like the Helix. “Oh it’s way too big and heavy”. I mean really? It’s less than 7kg? Can you not even pick up a big watermelon that weighs about the same?

And don’t get me started on guitars. Trying to sell some currently and it’s a constant “what does it weigh?” I don’t know, but I do know that you don’t even have to lift it that much because it hangs off a strap. And my 3 year old can have it on her lap without complaining so I’m sure a grown man will manage.

Rant over, for now.

I think it's not just about one piece of gear. Suppose you have a nice car to haul it around. But semi-pros and serious musicians will always have a main guitar, a backup, a pedalboard, a backup pedal or two, sometimes an amp, spare strings, spare cables etc.

Some of us have to travel using public transportation or rely on a band member who already has her/ his gear in their vehicle. So weight matters.
