I use it, but I only have two tones. All the way to the bright side. And almost all the way to the dark side.

Fwiw, my most common tone knob use has got to be to get a fake jazz tone out of whatever neck pickup on solid or semi-hollow guitars. "Fake" because real jazz boxes on traditional recordings actually are quite bright-ish. Just that you don't get that rich tone from solid or semi-hollow bodies, so there comes the tone control.

On my Les pauls, one in particular, I some times play with bridge tone up to half way down especially with new strings.

I also sometimes like to use the middle position with neck tone closwd and bridge tone open.

Fwiw, what I sometimes like doing is to dial the tone knob way back (almost fully closed), then use the bridge pickup and a wah to get into kinda synth-ish territory.
Here's some quick noodling:

That's a straight up pimpin' soundtrack there!

That’s a big one for me too. I rarely have room in the theater pit for all the instruments I need, so I almost always cover the archtop and jazz box parts on either a solid body electric or my acoustic. Usually because of instrument changes it ends up being neck pickup on the electric with the tone rolled down

Always. Why wouldn't I want to shape my tone if I can?
I agree. And even if don't like standard tone controls use the holes for something you would like. Maybe a blend pot, a series/parallel switch, a kill switch, active boost, etc. No point having a control that's taking up space and not getting utilized.

Times are hard when men find themselves forced to bicker in a thread about fucking tone knobs. That’s some splashing in the shallow end shit right there.

One has to count one's blessings.

At least we're not bickering about the shape/color of the knobs or whether they're in the best spot on our guitars. Though I rule out nothing! :rofl
