And so it begins (some of you may get this reference):

Should be an interesting ride…

I watched that movie again recently; wanted to see what it was like 4 decades later. It's such a weird-ass mix of good and bad. Some really excellent, original visual effects and styling though. There's a lot going on below the surface if you go looking for it.

The oddest thing about it is that it's a Disney movie with some barely disguised dark and horrific themes and a descent into hell (WTF!?). I saw it in a movie theatre as a 9 year old! That sinister murderous red robot Maximilian scared the crap out of me. I was obsessed with this movie as a kid.

It's still worth seeing, I think because there's nothing else like it really, especially if you consider the context of the era in which is was made.

John Barry score.

If anybody is interested in the strange background to the development and making of The Black Hole, I watched a YT video about it recently:

ALSO

@texhex ✨ Happy NAD! ✨

Looking forward to hearing more about your experiences with the Synergy system.

Yeah, I saw that in the theater as a 5 year old, and I actually had a 'Vincent' action figure. For years after, even the name "Maximilian' freaked me out. My wife and I watched it about ten years ago and it was a weird mess of a movie. My impression at the time was that they had originally been trying to go for a '2001' style film and then hurriedly re-worked parts of it after the success of Star Wars.

Synergy: The way to build a $5000 rig in $400 increments, because you don’t want to spend $4000 on a boutique amp.

Enjoy hell.

Synergy is awesome
Or, find the parts used and you can have a Mark IIC+ and a SLO in a MIDI-controllable head for around $2k.

I will admit I did get lucky that someone traded me their Syn5050 for a $400 pedal.

Despite the heat issue I have with the IICP, I love the synergy system. with the Syn2, I've been able to build my dream amp. Well, dream preamp anyway.

The funny thing is I might sell my SYN1 and Deliverance module. When I play the IICP and BE/BE modules, I don't feel the need for anything else.

Of course, I wonder if I might like the SLO better than the BE. lol... We'll see what happens when Synergy finally releases some new stuff.

I haven't heard anything good about the Synergy power amp.
Now you have. I love mine. In fact I used it to create IRs recently. It’s a fantastic flat power amp that’s also tube, and you can adjust the presence and depth to your liking. It sounds great with the FM9, Axe FX, and I adore my synergy rig.

Here’s a recording of it with the SLO module:

Lol... ok, I want a SLO module...

John Browne uses one quite a bit too. He’s got a few videos on his YT page running a Mesa Rectifier Recording Preamp into his Syn5050 and it sounds absolutely massive.

The SLO module is absolutely top notch. (Prior SLO amp owner) One of the best on the platform imo. (Powerball is :chef )

On the subject of the Synergy modules, I did a deep dive on these the past 6 months. I’ve settled on the IICP and the SLO as the keepers. Here’s what I went through:

1. Bogner Uberschall. Everyone said to start here so I did. Immaculate sounding module with a ton of options. It did have a bit of a squeal to it at higher gain settings, but overall an excellent module.
2. B-Man. Exactly what it says it it. It’s a 2 channel Fender Bassman. Fantastic cleans and vintage crunch with a few bass/tight options. If I was going with a heavy module and a clean module, this would be a keeper as a clean module. It’s Fender style clean sounds better than the IICP clean.
3. Friedman HBE - fantastic for Marshall sounds. Felt like a driven Plexi on channel 1 and a hot rodded Friedman BE on channel 2. No boost needed for saturation and it was instant Satriani tone. I would have kept it if I had an EL34 power amp I liked to pair with it, with the 6L6 Syn5050 it sounded like I was missing something. I tried it through my Badlander and really liked it with EL34s.
4. SLO - no comparison, this one rules. I like running a boost in front, using the blue channel for rhythms and the more saturated red channel for leads
5. IICP - It’s a Mark amp. It should have had a few modernizations like not sharing the EQ & input gain knobs between channels and the EQ sliders are too small, but it sounds really really good. Recorded with IRs it sounds amazing.
