Next is another Kip Elder build from Starr Guitars inspired by ZZ Top. Its oversized red sparkle body coupled with one single-coil sized SD hot rails humbucker, single volume pot, and kill switch scream simplicity and minimalism.

Enjoying a late night session with another Kip Elder / Starr Guitars build. This one started with a one piece swamp ash body and a Fender custom shop bird's-eye maple soft-V neck. Hardware includes SD noiseless pickups and a Super-Vee Bladerunner trem with bent steel Callaham saddles. Finished in a Clapton-ish silver nitro over 50's burst slightly relic'd paint job. This guitar is something special.

It's a solid, well made guitar that looks and sounds great, but doesn't hold a candle to my Starr Guitars strat. Regardless, like all of my guitars, it deserves a little TLC and playing time.

In 1990 while studying computer engineering @ UCF, I built a proof of concept (single string) self tuning guitar for my embedded systems class. 20+ years later Gibson released their self tuning Robo guitar. In remembrance of my college days, I picked up the Gibson Les Paul Standard 2016, High Performance - Tea Burst.

Kind of cool, yet also a PITA. Awesome case and superb finish. Plays and sounds phenomenal, and the novelty of this instrument brings me some joy, but I prefer the LP "standard" over the "high performance" model.

Time to pull out the manual and jump into some alternate tunings. Damn my aging memory.

Learning a solo that I need at least 22 frets and easy access to and I've barely touched this in the last 2 years. It's not feeling too bad today, but it's really a bummer how the truss rod issue is causing such a lack of sustain/life.
