What Did You Do With Your Guitar(s) Today?

Played some of my maple fretboard strats, and the frets/fretboard feel sticky, so I'm probably going to have to take some time as some point, and sand the finish off some, as it is unpleasant. I have maybe 6 or so with maple fretboards, so that'll be fun.

Bought this 2016 LP Traditional during the COVID shutdown. It came stock with 57 Classic pickups. I am not a fan of these so I installed a couple dimarzios I had laying around, but the sound was still meh.

I saw a set of Gibson T Type (T Top clones apparently) on Reverb so I snatched them up. I installed them yesterday and they are amazing. The neck pickup has the least amount of mud I’ve encountered. Bridge sounds sort of a combo of a Tele pickup meets an AC/DC sound.

Really impressed.

Checked the 9V battery in my 1978 Gretsch Chet Atkins “Super Axe.” After two 3-hour jam sessions this month so far, it registered at 9.28V. The battery powers two on-board effectors, a compressor and phaser. I used them both always on for both sessions, no breaks and tonight will be the third session.

After taking February and March off from playing to travel and attend other matters, before which I used an archtop at the jams, I’m putting Gretsch into circulation for the next several months. I’d like to get idea of how long is the usable life of its battery. I’m still getting used to the switches and such, but after a while I plan to add one of these:

9V battery powered, and plugging directly to the guitar output jack, these put another effector at my fingertips. The compressor (Orange Squeezer) would be redundant, so I may start with the Blue Clipper or maybe the Green Ringer, both “fuzzy” type boxes.

I’m an amateur guitarist (in the sense of A. Merrifield “the pleasures of doing what you love” and am in no rush; part of the fun is messing around with the old school tools. I want to keep involved with playing out live but without the pressures gigging formally, so jams are a happy medium between the practice room and the stage, just for fun.
 
Finally strung up my 20th Majesty in D, using 11-52's. It feels slinkier than my others in E using 10-46's, but I didn't have to adjust ANYTHING! (which I was hoping for!) :banana

Now I can play all those Dream Theater songs in D w/o using the VC on the Axe III. :rawk And for the ones in C std, they'll sound better, since I only have to drop the VC 2 steps instead of 4.

Next on the list, restring one in C std. That'll take another year. :rofl (And maybe a nut adjustment. :idk 12-56's)

I’m still waiting for my local tech to get back to me about picking up my PRS SE. I’ve had it in D before but it needed adjusting and also a long overdue fret leveling.

Hoping to do the same, play in D and drop to C with VC/transpose, when it’s back. It was supposed to be 2 weeks, and that was last week…
 
In a string-changing mood. Decided it was time to put my 7-string JR Cutlass back to stock 10-56 instead of the same gauge but with a heavy bottom. I had also added a 4th trem spring, so that came off too.

Strings were so low against the board that I couldn't even tune it up without tightening the trem screws. So I do all that back-and-forth shit you have to do with a floating trem, including a truss-rod adjustment. Get the strings all stretched and in tune, only to find out I did something really stupid.

If you care to guess, I'll put what I did in spoiler form (but you'll never guess. haha)

Since I've been playing my Majesty tuned to D std now for a few days, my ear "hears" that tuning, instead of E std. And I set the Axe III tuner for 2 semitones down, so I could tune the Majesty, but still have the tuner reading EADGBE. And I forgot to change it back until I realized, hmmm..., these strings feel a little looser than they should. Which is when I right away realized what I forgot. D'OH!!

Set the tuner back to 0 semitones, and do it ALL OVER AGAIN!!

I now cut it lying flat, using a compound miter saw. You can google the miter and bevel angles for any wall corner you encounter.

If you ever get to it, I can walk you through the steps over the phone Dave, along with a few tricks I know.
