What Did You Do With Your Guitar(s) Today?

Finished rewiring my PRS S2 Standard 24. One of the old pots went bad and they were measuring around 450-475k. The guitar sounded a little dull so got some new pots that measure 515-525k. New pots work great and it sounds a tiny bit clearer but not as big a change as hoped. So may have to swap them out for brighter pickups (currently using Suhr SSV's).

Interesting thing though, I put 10's on the guitar and tuned to D standard, but it sounded super dark like it always does, so I tuned it up to standard. It still sounds a tiny bit dark but I noticed the tuning is a lot more stable feeling. Lately I've been using 9's or 9.5's in standard tuning, but thinking I should probably jump back up to 10's.

Also for pickups, I've really been a big fan of alnico 2 humbuckers lately. I put a set of A2 Wolfetones in my PRS McCarty, the stock 85/15's that are A2 in my PRS CE-24, have a Suhr Woodbucker (A2) in my Kramer Baretta, and have Gibson Burstbuckers in my Epiphone 335. I really like lower wind A2 PAF's in the neck because it has a clear single coil vibe, and hotter A2's in the bridge because it tames the high end nicely.

Wanted to play with the new Fractal Drives into the Electra Dyne and then figured I’d setup a stereo rig ‘cuz why not. Big surprise, it’s awesome. Using a SD Powerstage 170 to power the cab on the left, with the EQ I can get it sounding pretty similar to the EVH cab. I’m just going straight into the input of the Electra Dyne and like last night’s noodle session, keep getting stuck on one thing and forgetting what I wanted to do.

I changed back the cab to the York IR Cream 65. Sounds really good with the Super Reverb. I believe they are Celestion. My own cab was actually pretty good a/b but that’s why I decided to pick the York.

After that learned some from a course on Truefire. Truefire + live teacher is a good mix for me.

With a live teacher you learn a song and that is the focus for that week and weeks to come. But what else do I do in that standard 1,5 hours at night? With Truefire I feel like I am actually studying / practicing

With YouTube I way to often come in a 30 minute search for “the perfect song to learn” so I stopped doing YouTube as a practice tool for now.

Finally "finished" this Lindert project today. I'd put it aside for months doing other things but really wanted to get it done by the end of year. Glad I did!
This guitar's been with me over 20+ yrs with different necks and pickups, but it's nice to have the original neck back on without the thumb headstock :grin. I added an iridescent sparkle over the gold I'd done previously, it kinda looks like pink champagne at certain angles with hints of purple and even orange. Hard to capture in the pic.

New laser cut pickguard with Dimarzio Air Classic neck and FRED pickups. Really digging the Air and they compliment each other perfectly, the position changes are seamless. I put in a regular volume and tone, added a bass cut control and for fun I added a switch to activate a piezo on the underside of the bridge. Gives some interesting texture to the output and a slight phasing which cool. I may change the knobs out to a different color or style but they're fine for now.

Playing-wise this thing is bouncy and acoustically loud, which puts a little something extra on the notes when plugged in. Plays super fast with jumbo Evo frets. Installed brass nut. Wilkinson bridge with Gotoh saddles. Planet waves locking tuners.

Im learning tornado of souls, ( wish me fucking luck lol ) I played it on Snkebyte plug into Dual Recto to make Mustaine happy, we all know how much he loves Tallica.....

Also, learned new licks and they sound cool..... will be using them for new solos......

My only goal from Jan is to get better at guitar. Im going to practice lot more.... These days I only played guitar on gigs....

Time will tell.... Its def hard work to find motivation to play... When i feel so tired all the time.....

Cleaned and organized my studio. The last few months it got pretty bad in here and I didn't even want to come in here as a result. Somehow I have more room than I ever did previously even though I added a big ass table. Initially I was just going to set the table up, but when I picked up the mixer and about 35lbs of rat-nested cable came with it I just took everything apart and started fresh.

(I'll save ya'll the trouble, it's a bottle of contact solution I shoot directly in my eyes when I'm sitting here for hours)

I don’t typically go for learning covers but I’m a sucker for the good ol Grateful Dead. Bounced down the Althea wormhole, and unexpectedly even working on singing this tune too.. (started singing tk get some context on the chord changes and it was surprisingly working out)

I'm bumping up the string gauge on my guitars in standard tuning. Was down to 9's, then 9.5's, and just picked up a bunch of D'Addario XL 10-46 balanced tension packs.

Feels pretty good! It's a little more effort to bend strings but the tuning is way more stable and there's less buzz overall. I did find though as I was working on some triads this morning up and down the neck, my left hand got pretty tired!

Trying to keep vibing with the Dreamcatcher I put in a Charvel DK24. It's ceramic,
and, as a result, I am struggling with the limited nature of it. Ceramic can be plinky
and plunky. Has that great tight attack for chugging, and immediacy for ripping leads,
but outside of that it lacks diversity. The split coil sounds on it are :barf and the
output is so hot I don't dare do anything clean on it. :idk

I'll leave it in for now, but I am not wowed by it. The change of pace is fun, but I am definitely
more of a slightly overwound PAF guy when it comes to Humbuckers. I can go more places
on a guitar with that kind of pickup. The Dreamcatcher kind of locks me into a more narrow
range of tones and possibilities.

I still like 10-46 on LPs, 9.5-44 on super strats, but had to restring a strat with 10-46 and enjoying the beefiness as well.

Get the Steve's Special then. Still ceramic, but sounds great clean, not too hot, and not honky. Works great in parallel mode too. :chef
Articulate with distortion, solid low end but balanced highs and mids, ever so slightly scooped.
Thank me later. :grin
