What Are You Working On Right Now?

I just did a poster for a friend in Atlanta who hosts an open mic night. I did not plan and was not asked to do this, but apparently he and the cafe owner like it enough that they are going to have it professionally printed and framed! The odd thing is, this fell out of the sky as I was generating artwork for a song on my new album and this piece popped up which looks exactly like my friend so I had to turn it into a poster for his 70th birthday jam! Not only that, but the colors match the color scheme of the venue (thank you Matrix)! If you are in or near Atlanta (actual address is in poster below), this guy (Greywolf) hosts the open mic every Wednesday (and this event is an open mic night but you need to reserve a spot if you want to play) and he is a very cool Cat!

I drive close by there almost everyday, just not quite that far east on Holcomb Bridge. So not familiar with the place, but may have to check it out some time.

You should! I know this guy (Greywolf) strictly through the PRS Guitar Forum, but we have had a lot of PM's back and forth and shared a lot of personal information so I do consider us friends. I would definitely love to visit him at some point and go to his open mic, but he does have some serious health issues that may interfere with that ever happening. He has done so much for the open mic community there that I refer to him as a Legend (sorry Leon, not trying to steal from ya', but this guy truly is)! He is also a luthier of 40+ years and builds some beautiful guitars (he became a PRS addict about 3 years ago and I believe 16 of his 42 instruments are now PRS including several PS models). Wednesday nights are the open mic night, but he does the sound for many of the acts that play on other nights as well.

Very cool!

Picked up something new from Ben Eller-

The 2 nps lick that starts Don't Stop Believin... Ben suggests playing just 2 notes, then just 3, then just 4, then 5, etc., as opposed to practicing the entire thing w/ a metronome, and gradually increasing the tempo.

I've actually used that method, biting off real small chunks of Petrucci licks like this from Innocence Faded:

Just practicing the triplets by themself, then adding the "landing note," getting that up to speed, before trying to string it all together. It is helpful.

There seems to be a missing Factor maybe gain and some delay
and the Decay is too long for the Hard trem, last too long

The decay is what’s giving me the hunch he’s plugged into a fuzz and has the volume knob turned down. The drop off is too quick to be a guitar with the volume knob on 10. There could be a quick tape echo on there, almost doing a slapback thing.

Stellar advice. I don't think any of the giants back in the day (Page, Gilmour) were not not
using their volume on their guitar as a gain control. Especially in backing/supporting parts.

Ugh, I booked myself for two shows at once that are full of old Irving Berlin and Gershwin stuff. :bonk

If you've never played stuff from that era, it’s a PITA sometimes. Fast tempos, tons of chords, complex harmonizations/voicings, key changes and modulations everywhere, nothing is diatonic... It’s a ton of work and the guitar is always so buried nobody can hear you anyway

I did hardly anything this entire weekend..., except woodshedding! :chef

I think I picked up a couple bpm on the harder stuff I've been working on (Innocence Faded definitely got a little faster), and focused on sextuplets mostly, with an emphasis on some chromatic licks. My ascending hasn't been sync'd very good, so I dialed everything way down, and only went up 1 bpm each time, but only when it was perfect, and totally comfortable. Like, no tension at all. And it paid off, because on the couple tries @ twice my practice speeds, I could tell the notes were getting much more accurate!

I hardly put the guitar down at all, while at home, and even played all through the night Saturday evening. :rawk:rawk

I'm so glad this doesn't bore me in the least, because I'm still making progress, albeit slowly. But that's ok.

I actually hate having to stop to go to sleep!

Damn, I just played another hour-and-a-half! I have to go to bed! But when I'm getting better at something, I just don't want to STOP!

I didn't quit Saturday night until 5 am Sunday! (Probably why I'm still at it right now!)

Ugh, I'm gonna be tired tomorrow, er, later today.

At least I have a sympathetic musician for a boss. Most Monday mornings he goes, "Did you play that new guitar all weekend?"

"You have to ask?"
:rofl

I really need to record some stuff and post it.

Thats awesome Tom, and of course the most important part is that your enjoying your time playing
As for me was a weekend with hardly no woodshedding. 10 Hour Work day Saturday and 12 Hour Chores Day Sunday

I expect a lot of Strum and Pick Syncing out of you, Met. :chef
