Olli's bass work is my favorite part of the band to be honest, and of course the keys. Just a dark, brooding badass time listening to this album and The Devil's Resolve.

Agreed. Olli's bass playing is a really important part of Amorphis' music and I was pretty happy when he returned. Even if that obviously meant the death of Barren Earth.
Oh, BTW, I've listened to the new Amorphis album a few times now and I have to admit that I don't particularly like it. Most of the songs lack a bit of bite; everything sounds a bit too soft and over-sweet.

I do agree though, it's polished and more on the pop side than I would like. My three favorite albums of theirs are Skyforger, Under the Red Cloud and Queen of Time.

However, I haven't had much time to listen to the new one more often because I just have to listen to the new Paradise Lost album over and over again, which is simply fantastic.

If you are new to the band, I'd recommend their 1993 album "Icon", or actually the re-recorded version "Icon 30", which is absolutely fantastic. Of course, every Paradise Lost fan has its favourites, but - at least to me - Icon is the definitive PL album.I'll give that a listen now, I haven't actually heard anything from that band
The new one is brilliant, but it's little less accessible.

I've always assumed PL was moany goth over slow heavy music that doesn't speak to me. Like; I would rather just listen to the Cure OR something heavy and not someone talking about drinking glasses of deep red in an almost transylvanian accent. Am I wrong?

This came on the car USB stick just as I got home after work, so gave it a quick listen.
An early “music minus one” LP from jazz guitarist Billy Bauer. It’s lots of fun to play along with this and the other tunes on the original LP, studio recordings of an actual rhythm section to play along with. I use iReal these days for that, which is more editable for keys, arrangements, etc. and there are plenty of backing tracks online as well, so the LPs are a kind of blast from the past. Back in high school and college in the 1970s and 1980s I had a set of LPs with backing tracks in various genres, I forgot the title. And here in Japan I’ve found in used vinyl shops a number of similar LPs that also include full bands to play with, along with charts, etc.

Yes, you are. PL invented the Gothic Metal genre, but they don‘t have much in common with the cheesy shit some of the later bands of the genre developed. No transilvania, no red wine… just honestly miserable music.

I need to dig in I think. I do like some goth tinged stuff. Unto Others is one of my newest favorites (though not miserable) and probably not much in common with PL other than certain influences maybe?
