What are you listening to right now ?

Yeah I agree, there have been some less great moments, but it's expected when artists are pushed so hard by their labels and management to churn out content without giving them sufficient creative time and space to get into it.

Burnt Offerings from Legacy is one of my firm favourites....

Go see them live, they are the best they've ever been nowadays in terms of the live sound, if perhaps not as loud as they once were due to ''ahem, stupid venues and sound police''.
Do they use an e-kit?

I knew of him (Bumblefoot)… but this showcases him brilliantly… My mind is blown by his talent!

Testament's new album Para Bellum has just dropped.
Definitely hearing new musical approaches being tried out here, both rhythmically and melodically.
I am enjoying this a lot more than their last couple of albums, it's refreshing.

I listened through this while driving. Need to give it another run with better sound system but so far liked it quite a bit.

"High noon, death soon!" made me chuckle.

If I have to criticize Testament for something, I think their albums need more slower "chill out" songs to cut the onslaught of fast and heavy as hell shit.

Yeah, they could definitely throw in some more dynamic chill parts, but I'm happy enough with this one.
Some of their other albums haven't been energetic enough for my liking, so at least they did a lot better here.

I actually cracked up when I heard "High Noon, death soon" :rofl :satan

First half of the album is brutal but second half leans into a little more obviously trad metal influenced stuff and I like it that way, tbh? There is a little bit of a copy paste vibe on the songwriting if we're overanalyzing but I feel like that comes down to the drummer more than anything else. Dude is a beast but very mechanical if we're nitpicking.

One of my favorite guitarists in a lovely version of the jazz / bossa standard Corcovado. It gets called at jazz jam sessions where I am, with or without a vocalist, but this version does it for me.

I like how Szabo uses open strings for a kind of drone effect, and he sticks close to the melody, ending with an ad-lib on a vamp rather than soloing over the changes. The audience liked it, too.

Listening to Szabo's minimalist style, I hear where Bill Frisell might have gotten some of his vibe, and I also like how Szabo at times works in an almost Arab-Islamic tonality to some of his songs.

Most of my listening is in the car. When something nice comes on (I have hundreds of tunes in a random playlist on a flash drive) I snap a pic of it at a traffic light, etc. This version is also on YT:
