I just read that Rolling Stone magazine's reader's poll had voted one of their early albums "best new band" or whatever it was, and in that same poll, their own "critics" voted them the worst! How can that even BE?

I gave up on that rag a LOOONNNGGGG time ago, because of shit just like that. They must be some of the most pompous, "we-know-what's-best-for-you-more-than-you-do" jackasses on the planet!
When I first heard STP, one of my initial reactions was, Hmmm, very few guitar solos, and it was kinda refreshing. And Dean's use of altered chords/unique voicings/chord choices in general, was very cool!
And Scott!! Damn, what a tragedy. He was SO gifted! Dude just RULED that stage.

Dean DeLeo has been consistently taking me to school with his crazy ass chords for years. The parts sound really simple but a lot of the chords are really cool and took me quite a while to get down. I love it when I see someone play a STP song and play it right.
Yeah Scott's voice was just something else. Really sad how that went.

I saw the Scorpions on the Blackout tour.I remember where I was the 1st time I heard that Album.
Sneaking into the bedroom of my friend's older brother and spinning some
Vinyl.
Me and my mate, right down in front of the right hand side of the stage. Giant PA stacks either side. Great show. Couldn't hear properly for most of the next day!

We've done Big Empty, Vasoline (probably the best banger of this lot!), Sex Type Thing,
Wicked Garden, Interstate Love Song, and Dead & Bloated (great Friday night song!
).Meanwhile, something dumb like Matchbox Twenty and 3AM.
A lot of my favourite bands/material to play was just a tough sell and would clear the room.
Pink Floyd. Check.
Alice In Chains. Check (apart from Man In The Box).
Soundgarden. Crickets.
Moody and dark is not what the Weekenders want. Those people are hope in a dark room
listening to Pink Floyd and Alice in Chains and Stone Tenple Pilots.

If only I could be in a band with other equally creative and fearless folks like that.
I have secretly wished for them to have a new singer from time to time---as singers
can tend to have more of an impact (for good and ill) on a band than any other member.
