My #1 album from my favorite band - this came out when I was 16 and it changed the course of what I would listen to in the future.

It’s mostly in DADFAE, every so often I tune a guitar to that for a while (like right now lol)Sooo good. I went along with some friends to buy the record at a record store signing session when it dropped. Wasn’t into Opeth that much by then but that record changed that. Really happy to have it signed on vinyl!
Would like to play more song from that record but some of it is in an open tuning or something so I gave up.
My friend bought a Spinal Tap CD while there and got them to sign it too. Mikael commented that it was the weirdest thing they had gotten to sign. I imagine that’s changed by now!
Yeah Steven left a lasting impression!I prefer Opeth after Steven Wilson became friends with Mikael.
I like everything that Steven worked on.![]()
Damnation is SUCH a great album - my favorite era is between Still Life and Watershed, I like their new shit better than pre Still Life (aside from Demon of the Fall that song is a banger)I prefer Opeth after Steven Wilson became friends with Mikael.

Damnation is my favourite Opeth album because Steven Wilson sorted out the growling
Lots of there fans didn’t like it because the growling wasn’t there .But it sold big time and got them a massive new prog rock audience around the world

I still haven’t really listened to the stuff before Blackwater Park. I found Watershed to feel a bit ”tired” and over time I’ve grown to like the newer records more than Watershed. The latest concept album is fun as well and the new drummer is insanely good and has really taken a good position in the band. Also: the rhythm guitars on the new album is recorded with a Telecaster!Damnation is SUCH a great album - my favorite era is between Still Life and Watershed, I like their new shit better than pre Still Life (aside from Demon of the Fall that song is a banger)
Mikael likes to use whatever he can in the studio, Strats, Les Pauls, Teles, PRS etc. Basically what gets him the sound - his acoustic is a Martin OOO. Live they use Synergy amps and a fractal AX8, acoustic sounds through their piezos. The last time I saw them in October was such a good show with the new drummer - they sounded mint.I still haven’t really listened to the stuff before Blackwater Park. A few months ago my wife became OBSESSED with Sleep Token which is amusing because she hates metal. Just listening to it non stop, consuming all the socials, buying the merch, etc.
I liked the last album, it was a cool blend of really heavy modern metal with the soaring R&B inspired vocals. I mean I've been digging that kind of stuff for decades, like Sevendust and Dance Gavin Dance (very different but same concept).
But holy shit the new Sleep Token album is fucking terrible. I can't really say that to my wife, but it sounds like Imagine Dragons. It's all slow pop ballads and the stuttering R&B over a drum loop. There's maybe 2-3 songs that have guitar in it from what I can tell. I dunno I couldn't get through it.
Not sure if I'm missing something or if the band was always just an R&B pop act pretending to be metal but woof it's unlistenable to me.
