For the past couple of months I’ve been practicing with a bassist and vocalist, once a week for a couple of hours. Not really for anything concrete, just practicing together.
The vocalist wanted to sing Caravan, a tune from the 1930s that was popularized by the Duke Ellington orchestra. It’s usually done C. The vocalist brought a lead sheet in E.
So upon listening to different versions, I found this by Gabor Szabo, actually one of my favorite guitarists. Since it’s just me and a bass for now I was attracted to how Szabo approached it as an instrumental.
Although he seems to be down tuned to Eb it’s clear he’s using open strings for a drone effect. Although our take on Caravan is faster, inspired by Szabo I found a way to fill out my ad-lib between the vocal verses, while the bassist holds down the groove.
