The best uses are when you don’t really notice it because it’s not distracting from the song. There’s definitely bands that pull it off, but a mark of their success is the fact I can’t think of an example off the top of my head. They’re out there though.

Our bass player used to come over and romp on mine while I was soloing...not very tastefully though

I almost never wah to the beat. I use it more like a vocal sounding effect, like what you would do with a talk box...also like to sometimes use the "cocked" wah effect like Schenker does.

That’s like asking if it’s possible to tastefully attend a funeral with a massive dildo strapped to your forehead.

I don't agree/think it's a matter of being distracting, I think the key is, using it sparingly. It's the kind of effect that you can/should, (IMO), only use on 1 song during a whole concert, or on 1 solo every 4th album or so.

It's just not an effect that can be used more often than once in a long while, without getting into "Kirk-territory".

Would you say that the wah solo in "sweet child o' mine" is distracting from the song? Or did you mean people using a wah during the vocal portions of a song? Even if during the song, there were quite a bit of disco/funk songs that featured a wah, rocking to the rhythm, in the background, that really added to the rhythm and backbone of the song.

Anyone likes using a wah and has one on their board?

Also, how to tastefuly use (not abuse) a wah?

I like a wah but they take up too much room on a board for how often I use one. I mostly have been using envelope filters instead. They are basically a type of auto wah that responds to the signal level rather than a foot pedal. So, set in the right balance, your picking attack operates the way sound.

My favorites are the Micro-Tron IV and a Mutron clone I got from some guy online.

I love Steve Vai's use of wah, very tasteful and musical, and it's not obvious. That's why I bought a Crybaby 95q like he uses. :)

I wasn't aware he stopped using HIS OWN wah? Just a case of the endorsement running out, I guess? I would imagine he could have a Dunlop sig wah with one phone call, yes?

Anyway, have we glossed over the fact that our own Pete Thorn is currently on tour with Satch and Vai? That's no small deal.

He stopped using the Bad Horsie like a decade ago 🙂

I’m seeing SatchVai with Pete July 3rd, can’t wait!

I love a good nasty wah on a lead line, and filtering certain phrases instead of the more rhythmic thing. Cocked wah can be useful. Funk wah is awesome as an accent. Like everything else, just don't go overboard with it on every song.

I’m partial to a good WAH pedal and have collection of old and newer versions .
My latest brand new acquisition and favourite is this one 👍
I’m not a fan of using a WAH /Volume or Modulation Pedals on Boards unless the boards are dead flat.

I’ve been through a few of them. Currently my favorite is the Teese RMC10. It has a unique sweep that IMO nails the elusive thing I hear in recordings of vintage Vox wahs.

If I couldn’t have that, the old purple budda bud-wah was a pretty good one too.

Big Ass Wah Thread here for anyone interested in more Wahfulness. :beer
