Video Games

A TV with variable refresh rate is great with games that support it on the PS5.

I've managed to get semi-hooked on Avowed. Like, I don't think it's a "great game" or anything, but I've still managed to waste a ton of hours playing it. Graphics run the gamut from "gorgeous" (scenery) to "what year is this again?" (NPCs). The story, writing, and acting are mostly bleh, and the side quests are basically, "Click on the entry in the journal, run to the clearly marked destination on the map, and kill everything before it kills you." But the combat is fun, exploration is compelling (despite the classic trope of treasure chests whose manufacturing cost clearly outweighs the value of their contents), and it has a way of pulling you back to check out "just one more thing..."

Im currently debating with myself if im going to do a Avowed or Skyrim play. Never played any of them before but i tried 2-3 hours of each and my conclusion is that Avowed looks better of course and has a better/rewarding weapon/fighting quality. But theres something very gimmicky about the whole game, it feels ridiculous in the same way Starfield did. Like you mention... the dialogue acting with a fixed camera view and starfield stupid looking npc's is soooooo dumb.

Skyrim feels more hefty and "serious" and cool... and also excitingly mysterious, but the graphics is boring and swinging weapons doesnt feel as nice as Avowed. Im torn. Interesting i noticed that Skyrim has more interaction with stuff that Avowed has on random items, and Skyrim feels more immersive to me in that way.

I know maybe one shouldnt compare thoose two games, but cant help it :rofl

Re: interaction - Skyrim, being part of that Elder Scrolls lineage, might have more of a CRPG/simulation vibe than Avowed (which can feel more like an FPS dressed up like a CRPG.) But personally, I'd grown bored with Bethesda's RPG formula by the time Skyrim came around, having already played Morrowind and Oblivion to death. Demon's Souls happened in between Oblivion and Skyrim, and it was really hard going back to Bethesda's floaty "Press X to Jason" combat.

Bottom line: the two games share a lot of the same weaknesses. In many ways, Avowed feels like a throwback to the likes of Skyrim. But Skyrim feels like an aging (or "classic"?) PC game to me, while Avowed has more of a weighty action RPG feel to it, better suited to console/ controller play. You just have to decide which of these appeals to you.

Crucially, Avowed is "free" on Game Pass, but I'm guessing Skyrim is "free-ish" somewhere, too?

Anyone playing Monster Hunter Wilds on a regular PlayStation 5? I know the PC port has been having issues, and the Pro seems to run well but I haven't heard much about regular PS5.

Yep I opted for the PS5 version just because I read so much shit about the PC port

PS5 version runs well; don't expect mindblowing visuals but the framerate is quite solid overall with the prioritize framerate setting

I got the first credits roll on it last night :beer

Now Im Ready Episode 4 GIF by Dexter

I finally beat Zelda BOTW last week, which wasn't actually that hard once I had fully upgraded a bunch of stuff.

I picked up the new Super Mario Wonder game as it was on sale this week. It's a neat game but honestly feels a bit stressful to play a brand new platformer after all that lazy adventure gaming! However...

Balatro. I finally downloaded it and I'm kind of obsessed. Got it on my phone too. Finally beat my first run yesterday although it took over an hour!

I started Indiana Jones & The Great Circle on Xbox Gamepass PC. Visually stunning, and the Vatican area is fun to explore so far.

One problem I've encountered is that if you haven't started a particular sidequest, the person or item you are supposed to find is not going to be in its location. This is bad game design as you can't just go "oh, I already found the item / freed the person" when you start the quest.

Have had some funny encounters with the enemy AI where there's like a whole batallion beelining for me, until I go up a few floors on a staircase and wait in a corner until they give up. Then they calmly walk out of the door in line and if you approach them they're just saying stuff like "Hello Father" (Indy is disguised as a priest in this area) while just minutes ago they were coming to beat you up.

Sounds just like how Todd would design things. :rofl :sofa

I got allergic to those things after huge Starfield let down… i know i shouldn’t have expected an Elite/No mans Sky/Mass Effect mashup of quality… but man… i can’t stand the Todd stuff.

But i am going to try Indy anyway… because… its indy!!!

I think the developers really got the essence of Indiana Jones right with this. It has a good sense of adventure to it.

I don't know how Troy Baker is able to sound so similar to younger Harrison Ford in this one, considering at least according to Wiki there's no AI used in its creation.

Solid but it’s too bad ID had to go and fuck over Mick Gordon and ruin that working relationship. His score for Doom is phenomenal. He did such a great job of modernizing the original game score ideas.

It’s gotta be tough for these new guys to step in and put their own spin on it, especially since they were probably directed to keep it in the same vein as what Mick did.

I'm at the making specialised builds for each monster stage of 'Wilds now.

Since I was stuck on the couch yesterday I figured it was time to finally start up Ghost Of Tsushima Director’s Cut. It was either that or Ragnarok. I haven’t played either on PS5 yet and I’m always a bit cautious about thinking I’ll enjoy a game that much more just because slightly better graphics, but 5 minutes into the game last night and I was re-hooked, for the 3rd time.

I know there’s some additional content added with the Director’s Cut version, I’m anxious to experience all that stuff. I found this time around I’m actually remembering the moves instead of occasionally referencing them then forgetting them immediately. There’s a lot of parry stuff that really changes how much damage you can do.

I played through and beat(?) Until Dawn on our old a$$ PS4 over the weekend. Great game I'd watch my boys play a few years back. Nice little horror title \m/
