Verellen Octal - Solid-state powertube replacements

Have had a few Verellens in my time.... including a Custom one-off, ultimate Marshall build
that ended up not being the ultimate Marshall. For me. :hugitout

I still have a Coop Combo he built. Ben's a legend. Great dude. I'd check out anything he's involved/invested in.

That's a cool looking amp!

What was the concept for your "ultimate Marshall", and why did it fall short?

Are these related to those Hovercraft hipster things that were out years ago? There was one in one of the shops I thought about firing up but I wasn't the demographic. Nor would they have been happy as I walked out after cranking a 200watt amp and then not buying anything :ROFLMAO:

Marketing speak: "OCTAL offers a tone alternative to power vacuum tubes, providing another tool in creating the sound that defines your playing."

Translation: "We can't make this sound anything like a real tube, so we are going to pretend it's shit sound is a unique feature!"
If this were someone without a reputation for great-sounding amps, I would match your cynicism. But Verellen stuff is awesome.

A solid state “tube” marketed as “built to give your amp more headroom, a stronger & cleaner tone”

:barf

That sounds like the exact opposite qualities I’m looking for in a tube amp

Tiny Amp Nation had entered the chat!

:sofa

I kind of agree. I had a similar thought pass through my head, too, but
knowing Ben he gravitates to the saturated preamp and stout power
amp side of things with his amps.

But yeah, these are not going to replace a duet of EL84s as much as a
pair of KT88s or 6550s to suit SVT Nation. :beer

what I really love about this site is how open minded people are here.

Getting out of our own preferences and use case scenarios is not always
a bad thing. Or is it? :idk

I know I am guilty of thinking I can speak for all of humanity. :crazy

But I also try to keep it a little light-hearted and poke fun at my own non-sensical preferences.
Mostly.

Sort of. :knit

Maybe not.

It was a JMP Plexi and a Modded JCM800 all in one. Sort of the same concept as Jake E
Lee's Signature Friedman a decade before that ever saw the light of day. Kind of. :idk

It was a big ask back at that time, and I was super excited for it, but it was just a little too
loose and sludgy. I have no idea why? Maybe all that Puget Sound damp air got into the
Capacitors.

I compared it to the 1985 JCM800 I had at the time and the percussive nature of the
Marshall was just so in your face and addictive. The Verellen was just squishier for lack
of a better term. I ended up having to sell both in and around COVID.

I miss the 800 more than the Verellen. :whistle

Ben's just a great guy who kind of had his own Stoner/Doom/Sludge thing going on
in the Amp World there in the 2010s.

Pretty sure it was Mike Sullivan from Russian Circles who hipped me to Ben and his amps.

Great band. :headbang

We were open minded enough to check out the website and see what they had to say. The fact some of us are less than excited based on what THEY are writing about it is not from a closed mind. They are describing a product that does exactly what we don't want in a tube.

It’s not just tiny low power amps. I would hate these for Marshall’s and anything else where I want the power section working, or where I want to feel some sag and bloom from the amp.
I suppose these sound like a good idea if you’re going for saturated preamp into a clean power amp
