Turning off avatars

I seem to recall that some forums using this software allow people to turn off avatars. Am I right about that? If so, I'd love to have the option.

If you stare at these avatars, they will absorb you

As long as we also get the option to change other people's simple alphabet avatars to something fun and less generic!
