The Ugly Truth

Been waiting years to hear someone equate "drum machines" with Skynet.

This sounds like a very specific thing happening in US at the time that perhaps didn't exist elsewhere in the world.

Here in Finland my understanding is that the local circuit of small bars, festivals etc in the 1980s to early 2000s would just about sustain a band touring, but a lot of bands traveled to Germany instead because the music scene was better, with more venues willing to give the band a chance or paid better. Plus more countries close by so driving back to Finland meant you could gig in a lot of other countries in the process.

The whole studio thing was gatekept for a long time. You either recorded on a crummy 4 track or you rented time in a proper studio, of various quality as said in the video. Now the only thing stopping you from making a professional recording in your bedroom is your ability to work all the tools you have.

Which has then led to the career track of a band from "get known locally -> get known more widely -> get a record deal -> go record a hit album in a real studio" to "get known on social media -> get gigs". The music industry bigwigs have much less say in what kind of music gets made.
