The Pickups Thread

… Will likely have to have a look at the Ilitch backplate one day …
That guy answers emails but his site NEVER works. It’s either hacked or he has credit processing in test mode. I’ve tried to buy from him a handful of times over the years. Has anyone ever had any luck buying from him?

I just added the 53mm spaced Suhr Asatobucker bridge pickup to my EBMM Cutlass.

I love it!

I’d be interested in hearing folks’ thoughts on the PRS 58/15 LT. I did some trading and ended up with a recent issue McCarty 594. Ergonomically and fit and finish- wise there’s a lot to like, the pickups took quite a bit of fussing with the volume and tone controls as well as the amp settings to get them where I at least like them, especially the bridge pickup. I like the guitar enough to maybe get a different set of pickups to try in it. I remember reading at some point that the originals paf bridge pickups were about as bright as a tele bridge pickup. If that’s true (never played one) then the 58/15’s do fall in that category.

Anyway I was just curious to see what experience with these pickups others have had.

Plain 58/15 (not LT not MT not +) came in my 594. They worked for me up to Mastodon gain levels, but no further.

Problem with pickups is everyone hears them differently and what a rabbit hole to fall in.

I tried Fishman Adlers, which looked damn cool but I didn't like them for long. Now have BKP Polymath and I'm good, but check back with me in 6 months!

Warmart I hear you on everyone hearing pickups differently. My ears after a lifetime of mostly careful use have a definite frequency bias. And yes I have to be careful to avoid those same rabbit holes.

Blix thank you for the samples. The pickups sound different but both sound like good examples of quality humbuckers with low gain.

For better or worse my pickup tastes are probably kinda pedestrian. I’ve had an SD hot rodded set that I’ve always thought sounded very good in an older asat deluxe. I’m toying with the idea of putting those in the 594 as a test.

Quick clip between DiMarzio Dreamcatcher vs Monty's PAF. Chose a fairly low gain AC30 tone.

DC first. Of course my LP managed to throw in a sour tone, even if I just tuned it  🤣

Presumably you prefer Monty's ?

I DO!

In comparison, the Dreamcatcher seemed a little thinner and harsher in the top end to me.

Monty's was fuller, more balanced and had bite but without harshness.

For playing into an AC30 type of tone I much prefer the Monty's indeed. The DiMarzio does better with hi-gain.

What the hell are you doing running a Dreamcatcher into a Vox AC30?? :hmm

:rofl

I recently put one in a Charvel DK24 and kind of didn't like it. Ceramic. Hot. Dark.
Hot. Dark.

Then I started to pair that guitar with some Engl amp models and an E530 and I
suddenly love that PU. :love

I found a cleaner tone highlighted the differences better. They both sounded great with more gain. :giggle:

Wow, definitely NOT dark in a Majesty, but such is the way of pickups!

Nice! I am pretty certain that no one has ever whittled those 2 pickups down as the final two to
determine which one to install in a guitar.

I originally bought the PAF to try in a strat and hated it, so it lived in a drawer for a few years until I got my Edwards LP, where it sounds great!
