The Fishing Thread

Man... It's a bad day when you can't even catch a bluegill!

Unless, of course, you're trying to avoid catching them! Which can be a thing :)
I normally fly fish out of a boat or I go to small creeks - I figured out last year that it was more difficult than anything trying to juggle fly fishing when I go with my kid, who needs me to hook a fresh worm every time she lets bluegill tear the shit out of the last one lol. I set up my spinning rod for a Carolina rig to target bass and the bluegill never touched it. There were other folks fishing who also weren’t getting any bass to bite so maybe it just wasn’t the day for it.

I'm not familiar with other jurisdictions, but in Florida, they take resource management extremely seriously. No license, undersize, over bag limit, out of season, restricted species/area infractions are criminal misdemeanors and arrestable offenses.

There is an excellent free phone app called "Fish Rules" that can help you identify your catch and determine if it's a keeper.

An acquaintance of mine misidentified 12 fish, and ended up with a $6000 fine plus 6 months fishing prohibition for harvesting way undersized Mutton Snapper. He now swears by the "Fish Rules" app to keep him out of trouble.

If you're planning on visiting the Sunshine State for a fishing adventure, Fish Rules is your friend.

Happy casting.

Yeah... Kids and grandkids can keep you hopping in that case!

I prefer to get them using a single salmon egg for bluegill. Easy enough for th the kids to bait themselves and the fish don't care ;)

Have you ever used a fly rod for bluegill?

It can be great fun with a dry fly and a light action rod. It's like top-water bass fishing on a smaller scale!

I have a 3wt rod for bluegill and also for brook trout in small creeks! Bluegill on the fly is a blast (any fish on the fly is a blast)

I missed this thread somehow. Love me some fishing. Grew up fishing salt and fresh water in FL. My bro just got back from there yesterday, caught some wahoo and various snappers among others. Probably have some wahoo sushi tomorrow.:banana I don't go like I used to but planning a trip down in september. I should go around here (GA) more often but I always get busy with something else.

I haven’t gone out by myself in a while, but I took my daughter out again this morning (this time on the boat) and she caught 7 bluegill lol. She said “those flowers on the lily pads are really pretty. Nature is really pretty.” And I knew then that I successfully passed on my love of the outdoors to her 😍
