Loving having one of these again.

Not too many emulations of it but I'll try and add what I can. First two are STL and Fractal.

Amp settings were dialled in with a Suhr and then I used a Mesa cab as the load, so it's a bit brighter/higher presence than I'd normally go for. I'll do some more normal settings too later on, but for the sake of comparing it should be fine. DI is courtesy of Nathan, gave the mids an extra scoop for him (settings are ballpark the Chimaira thing).

Thoughts:

STL is pretty good, albeit having some "digital modeller" characteristics where it doesn't quite feel as big/3D. Overall the sound and character and behaviours are there.

Fractal sounds cool, but it immediately struck me with that "Fractal low mids" sound which was quite hard to dial out. As usual, it's much darker than the real amp too - not only did I have to crank the tone controls closer to their maximum, but I also did some tweaks to the impedance curve. I'm sure its possible to get closer still, but I don't think I've ever encountered a Fractal model that isn't darker than the real amp.

Thank you! Interesting about the 6160 models in the Fractal. Weren’t they recently remastered in firmware 32?
They’ve had some tweaks and they’re definitely as close as they’ve ever been (and sound excellent). I just don’t think I’ve ever encountered a Fractal amp that wasn’t darker than real amps are, and I think often there’s a bit of a tonal giveaway in the low mids.

It funny because that what I feel I hear in the new Stadium Hi gain stuff kind of a stuffiness in the low mids

The Fractal stuff I think has gotten miles better in that area than previously

To me of what I have owned the QC is probably the most top end and upper mid snarl which probably explains why the heavier players and math metal guys like it

You can hear the low-mid mud in the models more than you can in the real amp; and they have subdued high-frequency content too. Interesting.

I would agree and it seems to happen across a few platform
Fractal , Line6 , Fender too IMO
I honestly wonder what the cause is ?

No but seriously is it not odd that this happens on multiple platforms w different methods of measurement and different algorithms
It would be fascinating to see the different A/B setups and measuring setups they all use. ToneX official captures for instance are just insanely dark and weird imo. I have to believe that their testing systems werent like this or I really dont have answers there.

That old NDSP video where they showed Nameless in the studio vs the real amp was peak viewing. Showing the audience that the reference amp vs the plugin is insanely close to 1:1 makes for great viewing/comfort. That ampsim is already king and seeing the video really helps solidify that as well.

I can totally see why they dont show their testing methods behind the scenes, but if I worked at one of these places I'd want to boast about how good the modelling tech is and show off the digital model vs the reference amp as best as I could. It should be relatively easy to set this up in the studio once all is said and done.

With Suhr you mean their loadbox? Then why add the Mesa cab?

IR is loaded in the computer?

What's the result when you choose the Suhr impedance curve in the Fractal, instead of Recto?

I just happened to be using the suhr earlier and then switched to the mesa cab, as it usually sounds similar but just slightly better. And it sounded cool in the room. Usually I’d refine the tone a bit based on how it sounds through the mic but for the purposes of this I wasn’t chasing anything too specifically.

The cab load just sounds and feels better and I wanted a better reference point to compare to than a load box.

IR loaded in the computer, same for all.

Similar result with the Suhr load in Fractal, I still need to dive in and tweak things to make them match.
