TH-U Essentials for free

I never liked the interface too much (still have a full license for V1). But you can already do quite some things with this free version as it seems. Unfortunately there's just a single SD1 drive model included, but obviously you can add other plugins before.

Nice one. Been curious to try TH-U properly. There’s a couple of models that other platforms haven’t really gone near.

Any favourite models in here? anything you guys think it does particularly well at (or falls short at)?

I didn't know what it was but I downloaded it anyway. Whoooo. I really like that SLO model with a SD-1 in front.

Hm, getting occasional crackles at 32 samples buffersize (Macbook Air M3, Logic, Motu M2). CPU meter doesn't indicate any possible issues, all other amp sims are running fine, too.

I was getting lots of latency at the default setting of 512 so I went to 64 and it's better. There's still latency though but it's workable.

Got it.

Always wanted to try this because there's a Demeter TGP-3 VST that will only run on the TH-U platform.

it's rather bread'n'butter models
just seen the included gear list, and honestly, I'm a bit surprised they value this at about 1/3 of the full maxed out package when there's so little. Its a bit more like a free taster, which is absolutely fine for free but maybe more comparable to the free version of Amplitude or something than an actual paid product.

I remember trying their captures a while ago and it sounded like a weirder version of a Kemper to me, so I'm a bit more curious about their algo based stuff. NAM really has made the more primitive IR based capture stuff totally redundant IMO.

Yeah, the standard asking price is absurd, nobody should ever buy it, especially with things such as NAM for free.
But so are all standard asking prices. Bought IK Studio 4 Max for 149 bucks and their website is still claiming the original full price would be around 12,000 bucks.

Well, in all honesty, in terms of latency that's the worst interface there is. Around 16ms roundtrip latency at 32 samples buffersize (at 44.1kHz). Most affordable interface these days deliver something between 6-8ms at the same settings, my Motu M2 (hence a rather cheap device) kicks in at just 3.5ms.

It's not round trip. The output is an Presonus Audiobox. I don't use the Presonus for guitar as the input impedance is only 500k.

Using the HX Stomp there is no noticeable latency using Helix Native or the models built into Logic Pro so TH-U must be adding latency somewhere.

Does TH-U include anything that significantly eclipses the equivalent stuff in HX Native going for it? I’m tempted to snag a license but should probably spend my precious time working with what I’ve already got than try something new. 😅
