TC Electronics Plethora X1

I just bought a X5 and returned my X3. I paid $300 used(mint) for the 5 which is only $20 more than the 3. With the latest FW It can make one slot a fulltime Tap Tempo/Tuner(long press) and leave me 4 other slots. For me this is enough. This is a secondary board for a local jam, it more than enough. I have better stuff for recording.

I guess there's no way to use an external footswitch for tap tempo or tuner?

At least not for tap tempo. Which really sucks.
If the X3 had that (but it doesn't even have an EXP input), I'd bought it long time ago already. The X5 is too big for my use case already (and apparently still doesn't allow for tap tempo via an external switch).

MIDI CC 92, in this day and age, someone must make a 3/4 button fully programmable midi cntlr, not my strength of knowledge. For the price 4 slots plus a tap tempo/tuner fill my needs. Using the setup for a local blues jam. I won't need more and vanilla FX.
Definitely messed up by not allowing the EXP port to use a FS and program to Tap. Seems pretty universal. Price was right for what I need, but, yes, not a perfect design.

Yeah, really, that's as awkward as it gets. But hey, at least the guys from Mooer have stolen that concept with their Ocean Machine (which I had an eye on for a while as well). Also can't do external tap tempo, has no global tempo and needs a long-press to take you to the tapping mode.

Hard to believe Devon Townsend was involved with that.

Got my used X5 and programmed it for the tap tempo/tuner slot at the end of my 4 other effects. You can go into the settings and individually set any tempo-based effects on your board to sync to the common tempo. As a more simplistic user, this satisfies my functionality requirements.
Would I have like the tap tempo to be external controlled and save the 5th spot, of course, but at $300 used, it's good piece of gear, for me.

Doesn't make sense for a X3, leaving 2 slots for fxs, but still having 4 slots to work with makes the X5 usable, for me

I picked up an X1 but cannot connect with my Windows laptop with USB or with my Android phone via Bluetooth. Anyone else having this issue?

ADT on this thing with full stereo ins and outs, and no midi. Wow what an odd choice. This thing could be killer in big rigs if you could control it.

I’m going to put the same thing here I commented on their product video for this pedal. I dislike how many of the effects and parameters in the pedal are hidden and only accessible through the app. I haven’t used the HX One, which feels like the closest competition, but my understanding is all the effects parameters in the HX One are available on the pedal without messing with Bluetooth phone connections that TC to this point still hasn’t gotten right, or long USB cables from a PC to the pedalboard just to change an effect out. They even say in their product launch video the pedal is preloaded with certain effects in the slots and you have to use the app to change them out.

I had a Plethora X3 for a while, and I thought the effects in it were decent. However when I saw how deep you could go, like turning a compressor into an overdrive pedal by messing with the EQ curve in app, it was disheartening these parameters were simply not available to edit in the pedal itself.

I’m not just speaking of this pedal but really the whole Plethora line. If the competition, Fractal, Eventide, and Line 6 can make their pedals basically fully functional from either the pedal or the app, why can’t TC? They have powerful algorithms but if you never connected the pedal to a PC you’d never know it.

Man, i feel your pain 😥 I no longer buy hardware requiring a phone or PC to access all functionality.

I really like Positive Grid's mini amp line, but i don't want to be tethered to an app to use them.

I don’t mind needing a phone to deep dive, but I do mind needing a cable (ahem, @Digital Igloo ).
I always have a phone on me, but don’t always have a usb cable and adapters.
