Suggestions on overdrive pedal.

I have a Way Huge Green Rhino into a MXR custom Badass overdrive. I want either a Dover Drive or a Zen Drive after them? Trying to get an Eric Johnson like tone (like a thousand others). Any ideas would help. Playing a Strat into a stereo rig. Also using a Belle Epoch echo and a TC Electronics stereo chorus.

FWIW EJ sets his plexis in a curious way; with the presence and treble off (or nearly off):

Dover Drive will get you in the ballpark a LOT more than the Zen Drive. I know EJ's got Zen's on his travel board, I think he's just using them for his dirty rhythm tone, though. If you can get your hands on the Germanium Dover Drive, go for it. The OG/white one is great, but the GE is like a mix of EJ's Fuzz Face AND Tube Driver/Marshall tone depending on where you're at on the neck. The BC178 isn't different enough from the OG/white one to really make a big difference, I'm going to sell mine as I haven't plugged it in in almost 2 years now.

I made a comparison of all 3 a while back-

Some random noodling with the GE Dover in front of a Fractal Bassman model-

I've heard great things about the Dover drives, and know Drew ^ loves them, been tempted myself a few times. The other obvious option is to get you BK tube driver from the man himself, he still makes them.

I own a few and love them. Also, can't go wrong with any number of Fuzz Face options out there for another flavor.

Does anyone know how to get on the Lovepedal newsletter? Everytime I try it says "not a secure page" I click go ahead anyways and it just says it can't and sends me back to the last page. Sent them 4 emails about it but can't get a response. Anyone know another way to contact them?

I used to have a board full of ODs and then I got the Kernom Ridge. Now the only other drives on my board are ones that are dual pedals, which I rarely use the boost side of. The Ridge is seriously freaking fantastic. I dialed in all my favorite tones on my other pedals, recreated them on the Ridge, saved them as presets and then sold them all :rofl

I'm gonna look that one up and check it out. Thanks for the post.

It's a bit pricey, but totally worth it! I had initially thought I'd want to keep a second boost on the board because I like stacking them... But I can dial in the stacked tones with it and save myself from having to press two buttons vs one.

You're going to want some sort of Plexi flavor (amp preferably, stomp secondary choice) boosted by some sort of BK Butler Tube Driver-ish stomp.

The Plexi part you want to turn down the presence & treble. I'd go 25W Greenbacks 4x12

Add Echoplex and spacious reverb.

I've never been able to get on it. I just check the shopify site every now and then. There's a couple other Lovepedal fans here, one of us generally updates the Lovepedal thread when there's a sale going on. Kinda odd he didn't do one before Christmas, so I'd expect one soon.

FWIW, the Dover Drives are pretty much recreating the Plexi + Tube Driver, there's a shitload of gain on them. Now that I have the PastFX TD-Y, which apparently has a lot more gain than an actual Tube Driver, I'd recommend OP has something creating some dirt to work with a Tube Driver if he went that route.

I haven't even tried playing with EJ tones with this TD-Y yet, I've been learning the "Poles Apart" solo and it's brutalizing my fingers. Gilmour is a fucking bending virtuoso.

I did a quick look and found that the Dover Drive circuit has been traced and there is a PCB available to build this pedal. I hadn't seen these before. If I finish the pedals I have in the build process and decide to look for another one to build, I may build this one to check it out.

Me too. @DrewJD82 has banged on about it so many times I thought I'd take a look.

The first description I saw read "fuzz face into the clipping section of a zen drive" = SOLD. I'll be building one of these in the new year, looks like it does well after buffers too which is a result. Might take some playing around to get the bias right though. I'll update the pedal building thread when I've built it.

The BKs have a ton of gain too, it's just their eq is very interactive. I rarely set the gain past 2:00. The best way to dial them in imo is too start the eq controls at zero, then just turning up the bass starts adding in lots more gain and gets that sweet low mid thing that makes them sweet. Then turning up the treble past a point starts reducing gain somewhat. Not sure if the Dovers are designed the same way eq wise though.

Gilmour is a fucking bending virtuoso.
Dude, he's like the greek god of boomer bends, there is none higher!
