SLO100 vs NAM vs Tonex Blind Test, Time to Go Back to 2015 :)

Of course there's a lot of variables here and I have no real idea; but I'll play along anyway:

  1. Tonex
  2. NAM
  3. Real Amp

I'm saying 1. is Tonex because I believe Tonex to be a little "lossy", and I like that sample the least so I'm going with that.

Did I win a cookie or something? :columbo

Thanks for playing :)

My guess:
1. NAM
2. Tonex
3. Amp

All 3 phrases were fine and sounded good to ne - none was bad or less good…
My guess is based on following assumptions:

#2 might be Tonex, cause least gainy/fluid of them three

# 3 might be Amp, online because slightly more highs/details than #1

# 1 would be NAM

I too would wager #3 is the amp. But I don't really care for guessing which is which but rather which I liked best: #3 and along with it, my bias.

1st one sounds brightest to me (like it has an extra bit of fizz on top), 2nd one is darkest, and 3rd is somewhere in the middle of the two.

2 sounds the least gainy and a different low end. 1 sounds like it has more gain than 3.

I (too) am going to guess 1 as NAM, 2 as ToneX, 3 as real amp.

I couldn't hear a difference on my monitors. With headphones I can hear a bit of difference in the bass on 1, and 2 and 3 are still really close.

I'd guess 1 is not a real amp, hard to tell the other two but leaning 3 is the real amp.

Very hard to tell which is which, but definitely the second sample sounded a little worse than the other two: more mid-honky and lacking a bit of low-end.

They are close enough to be a wash for me in a mix for sure. iPad Bluetooth to Sony WH-1000XM5’s for playback so who knows?

My guess is similar to others.

ToneX
NAM
AMP

But 2 and 3 are so close I am just going with a hunch.

Hey, I have the XM5 also. I ran an IR using Sound ID and they are the most clear sound I have ever heard.

I have the Slate VSX also, which keep getting better But the XM5 so clearly show the reverb and small details nothing else does.

I run them wired and off with the IR in a system wide plugin.

If you would like the IR let me know.

I’d love the IR! Thank you!

That's wild. Are you running the XM5 in bluetooth or wired?

To me the XM5 sounded really muffled and has a really bad channel imbalance so anything in mono sounded skewed across left to right. I tried three different pairs and they all did the same thing. XM4 had the same issue to a lesser extent. Every other bluetooth headphone I tried was just fine.

I ended up giving the XM5 to my wife and she loves them, but don't ask her to analyze audio...

I use wired and off for the IR.

Would you like to try the IR?

IR received so I wanted to thank you publicly for that as well as for the info shared here and in the DM. Very cool!

I hesitated typing out what I was using to listen as being possibly superfluous but I’m glad I did share those little details. You just never know when stuff like that might help or result in something like this. I love it and am very grateful @Deadpan

Very welcome.

Glad it works for you!
