Skeumorphism anyone?

Are you a fan of more skeuomorphic digital guitar gear?

I don’t need skeuomorphism but sliders are the absolute worst control interface. That is my primary gripe with HX Native/Edit.

IMO sliders are an engineer’s solution. I say that lovingly as a programmer with less than stellar UX/design chops. If I had built HX Edit/Native as an MVP, it would have had sliders at launch too, and I’d be over the moon with it.

Do I love them visually? No. Are they exciting? No. Would I prefer L6 devote resources to creating, maintaining, and integrating all those digital assets instead of fixing bugs or adding new features to Helix? A RESOUNDING NO.

  • "Ooooh... pretty."
I will say that I think there is a tendency in design circles at the moment (other than to just ape whatever the fuck Apple are doing, coz they're "geniuses" apparently) is to disregard "prettiness" in favour of utilitarian choices, but pretty has its place. If we can fool the user into thinking they are using an instrument or an amplifier, rather than a bit of software, they'll be able to enter the same flow state they can enter when they're using a real amp, or when they're sat behind a drum kit. If they enter that state, they make more music. They find our stuff productive, and they become long-term users.

A lot of the time "pretty" is sacrificed on the altar of beancountery. It's expensive to make stuff pretty and easy to use. Really really REALLY easy to just slap everything on screen and go "hrmmm.. how many pixels do we need?"

I don't care for it. IK Tonex app is a good example of how skeumorphism adds nothing and wastes space in the UI. Since there's only a handful of different looks for captures, they end up not looking like the real amp and thus end up being pretty useless. On top of that since you can have a larger list of stuff or the amp graphics on screen, it reduces usability.

I made a mistake using the term skeuomorphic. What I meant for this to be about was amp models functionally matching their real world counterparts, not looking like them.

I don’t know if there’s a better term for that

Example:

I pull up a Deluxe Reverb amp model and it contains the preamp, power amp, reverb, speaker, cab, everything just like having the real amp sitting there. Same controls on the front panel, same inputs that can be selected, I can disconnect the internal speaker and plug into an external cab, etc. The ability to have an AB pedal I can throw in front to change between the channels,

Or I pull up a Mark IV and it contains all the same front and back panel controls, all channels, etc.

Oh, you mean modeling the amp in its entirety, and allowing to interface with it like you would with a real amp.

What about connecting the Speaker output to the FX Return and destroying the amp?

Feature parity, maybe? And I’m all for it. Very much a “why not both” proposition, though, where an authentic mode and a deep edit mode working hand in hand present best of both worlds.

As for graphical skeumorphism… pros and cons. I like “pretty” as much as anybody, but I see all of DI’s points above, as well.

Physical controls FTW.

You used the right term, it’s just that we’ve had a hundred discussions on knobs vs sliders so that’s where everyone’s mind goes automatically.

Until Fractal put all channels and modes and switches within the same model, they have some way to go unfortunately. Absolute creativity killer having all your settings wiped when going between different modes on a Friedman or Mesa Mark Series.
Not aware of this My setting stay as is when changing amps, scene's and channels
But I'm Currently using a SLO not currently using Mesa or Freidman ATM

:idk
