I find Mayer to be incredibly boring and overrated, and the video above definitely highlights that. But I guess that’s just not my type of music.

I’m a Mayer fan. I love that style of playing. I’ve been a SRV and Hendrix fan for a long time. I became a Mayer fan when his Room For Squares album came out. I was in Target and wandered into the music section. I saw that the CD included a bonus disc that had covers of Lenny and The Wind Cries Mary. I was like, “wait, what?”
ETA: The (long) solo in this instantly became one of my favorite solos of all time. I love how it builds so nicely in terms of dynamics.

Ya know, I’ll wait to check this out at home so I can give it a legit listen. Just like food, my tastes change a lot and I’m always eager to add something new to the menu.
Coincidentally the newest QC update was quite Dumble heavy. A model, bunch of captures, and 3 two rock cabs. Maybe it was his?

This is the song I think of when I think of Mayer. Fun lick to play and very challenging to sing while doing it

I love this song but this is the only such song of his in his catalogue (afaik), so not a great represntation of his usual musical output. I think I just find him to be an SRV-LARPer (which is essentially an exercise in LARPing as someone who was a Hendrix-LARPer) who got way too big making radio-friendly stuff to actually find the time and effort to make the music he might have made if he didn't have the burden of being a mainstream pop artist.

imo most of Mayer and SRV's overlaps are things SRV didn't come up with anyway. SRV was almost definitely a huge influence on him, which I'm sure he's said, but I don't think he sounds like an SRV clone either.
Anyway, Mayer is definitely a pop artist, and he probably enjoys writing and likes pop songs (well, hopefully for his sake!). Like most pop musicians, he does things and has interests outside of pop, whether in his free time, as side projects, or on specific album tracks, but when he works those influences into his pop projects, they are, well, still part of a pop project. If you can't stand pop or see it as a dirty word, then you probably won't enjoy the songs (which is fair), even if he was the best guitarist in the world or whatever.
There is definitely a Slash type thing with him though, where he is a good guitarist, but he's also very well-known as a guitarist by laypeople, and so that turns into "he's the best ever!!!"... which then triggers the predictable "he's actually not good" backlash from a lot of musicians (especially ones allergic to mainstream anything). Very few musicians who are well-known for making popular music ever live up to the hype, but that doesn't mean they're nothing either.

NDSP was my assumption all along, to be honest. IIRC Mayer was seen playing gigs with a QC a couple times, and the Dumble models/captures showing in the latest firmware would be much of a coincidence otherwise.
It would be a major score for Neural. I know most here don't care much about Mayer's music (i don't
) but the guy is an incredible player... and he sells gear.
