Every time I hear people about why they think Mayer is great I'm thinking, 'That's Lage you're talking about.'
idk about that, but people really into his playing SHOULD check out "View With a Room"!

Maybe I haven't listened to enough, but tbh Bonamassa's music, on the other hand, always just reminds me of all the 90s movies that had a character be a blues musician to make them seem cool.
this vibe:

Yes, but your uncle's nostalgia for that time and sound is enough to get him to spend $100 on a ticket, even more if he gets to see some of them real old geetars!
New album coming next month too.
I've somehow still not listened to his last one! But I heard it was great.
Now we need NDSP Archetype: Julian Lage, and it's just a Champ, boost, and Flint clone.
I think the new spring reverb on the Quad Cortex is based on the Flint.
Generic gain pedal, into the Fender Deluxe Reverb 64, and then the new reverb pedal should do the trick. No Archetype needed.
Won't get to try this 'til I get home from vacation though.
Hm, so they modeled the worst thing in the Flint. Interesting.I think the new spring reverb on the Quad Cortex is based on the Flint.

I had to recheck that. There was a post from a guy saying he was able to drop his Flint off his pedalboard in light of the new spring reverb. But nowhere was it said the reverb is actually based on the Flint.
Alright, I listened to Continuum while making dinner for the kids. When I called out for Alexa to play it my wife was straight up

If I heard it blind with no Mayer baggage and had no idea who he was, I would dig it and add it to the rotation, and wish he had a better voice.
If that album had never been released, but all the other John Mayer stuff had, and we had all the Mayer baggage, and then Joey Landreth released Continuum, with him singing but everything else sounding preeeeeetty much spot on tone for tone and note for note as this record...I'd love it, if I'm being honest.
But there's still a lot of over the top love for his playing in some circles that does make it hard not to cop the ejecta "everything but Suhr, Friedman, and Tubes are over-rated and Fractal Fanboi Twink" attitude about him.
A friend once played me a live version of Gravity with what is indeed a pretty great solo in it. At one point he bends the string behind the nut, and keeps it very in tune through several degrees. And it's pretty skillful. But my friend was falling off his chair like it was some unheard of feet of guitar trickery and I was like "(1) uh, pretty sure I could pull that off with not insane amounts of woodshedding and (2) guess my dude has never seen/heard Jim Campilongo" which of course he hasn't because my friend doesn't have the patience or interest to sit through a Jim Campilongo album or even video of a live performance. His music needs a deep melodic hook and to be rooted in pop/rock sound and structure. Little Wing and Cliffs of Dover are juuuuuust about as far as he can go into the instrumental guitar direction. Which is fine. But if John Mayer were just the singer and he had a guitarist in his band playing these notes -- there'd be fans, but whoever that sideman guitarist is wouldn't have as much sig-gear and guitar-world plaudits as Mayer does.
In terms of pop/r&b/soul blues music guitar hero...I'll take Derek Trucks playing with Susan Tedeschi and the full band ANY DAY and twice on Sunday for guitar playing.

If he doesn't carry a whole lot of pop-culture baggage for you, that's awesome. You get to objectively listen to his music. For those of us in the US...I'd say it's preeeeeeetty hard to listen to any of his music objectively with the amount of time his face spends in front of cameras, often in a pretty crappy light. What baggage? Honest question
Derek Trucks is awesome, also love his stuff. Lucky for me I don't have to choose. Sometimes I want to listen one, sometimes the other, other times I prefer something else entirely.
If I put on Mayer around my wife she'd be like "wth is this? Put on some Ozzy or AiC before I throw something at you!"Alright, I listened to Continuum while making dinner for the kids. When I called out for Alexa to play it my wife was straight up
