What songs of his do you like, though? I am actually a defender of JM generally speaking. He just doesn't make any music that moves me. Zero. He's funny on the Chapelle show and a few rando appearances in comedy movies.

I think Neon is fairly timeless. There are some great guitar songs too, like Who Did You Think I Was? I also agree that his Bold as Love cover is one of the best cover songs ever, because he nails the feel of Hendrix's playing but was still able to put a bit of himself in there too.

Waiting on the World to Change is pretty timeless as well. Most of the John Mayer Trio stuff is just good music. I get not liking, but when guitarists actively hate on Mayer, it does make me scratch my head a bit. Dude has played no small part in keeping guitar relevant, and inspiring more players, both things that are incredibly good for our hobby.

A girl I was into back in the day was obsessed with him and that song, I’m pretty sure it was the only album he had out then, she asked me to learn it and then life does what life does and next thing I know, 15 years have passed and he’s now a blues idol. I remember the first time I heard someone refer to his electric playing I was like, “Huh? I thought that dude did like Dave Mathews love songs on acoustic?”

And despite listening to a good chunk of his stuff to see if I’d be interested, I still think of him as the “Body Is A Wonderland” dude. I tend to keep him in the same box I keep Bonamassa in; don’t have anything against them, I’ve just never heard anything that stayed in my head after I listened.

I just missed BCC with him a month or so ago. Then missed Kotzen/John5, then missed Ryche this past weekend and there was someone else I had tickets for and missed in the last couple weeks too.

I guess it’s an ADHD trade-off; get better at the important shit while the more recreational activities take a backburner seat.

Does original DT keyboardist still play with them? That was a big draw for me originally as well. We just missed the Death Angel Act III anniversary because of this dumb a$$ weather which for me was HUGE

Yep, Derek Sherinian. Though he’s DT’s 2nd keyboardist, Kevin Moore was the original dude.

I do not get Dream Theater at all. Outside Pull Me Under nothing they have done is remotely interesting or appealing to me.

Maybe there's some weird dividing line between those two?

I couldn’t give two shits about 95% of his music, but I have full appreciation for his talent as a player and songwriter. We could do far worse than having him as one of the primary faces of the guitar. He can play his ass off, knows gear, seems approachable, and has smashed a laundry list of 10’s. He’s alright by me.

Yeah his resume is unbelievable. Not talking about the music either.

He did seem like a complete tool until he did the Dead and Company stuff. I think he may be a bit more chill now but he was insufferable for years.

Grateful Dead, that's another band I have zero interest in ever hearing for the rest of my life.

They're one of those bands I respect, but I don't really enjoy listening to their music 99% of the time. Always feels like music your uncle likes, and I don't even mean that pejoratively. Some of the riffs and basslines are fun to learn though.

At first I thought you were referring to Resse from SRV and Double Trouble who plays with Joe but not BCC. Didn't realize that Derek Sherinian was in Dream Theater until I googled who the current BCC keyboardist was!

For what it's worth, if you like electric blues, Joe puts on a great show, but I don't find any of his compositions to be overly memorable and if you are not into a blues solo, it will get old fast. I grew up not far from him and first saw him playing with the likes of BB King and Edgar Winter when he was 12-13! He is quite the gear geek and geek in general and probably on the spectrum. I do respect him for what he has achieved as a blues player lacking any special looks, charisma, song writing ability or other characteristics that tend to help with popularity.

As for Mayer, who has all that stuff, I definitely respect his ability to play a variety of styles very well, but I also find his song writing to be uninspiring. I would definitely go see the Trio in a heartbeat, but I have little interest in his pop material. I also find Dead and Company tough to listen to, but that's mostly the super slow tempos and I don't think John is responsible for that as much as the 80 year old geezers.
