Danny Thompson (1939–2025)

Danny Thompson, the esteemed British double bassist renowned for his pivotal role in the folk-jazz ensemble Pentangle, passed away peacefully on 23 September 2025, at his home in Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire. He was 86 years old.

Early Life and Musical Beginnings

Born Daniel Henry Edward Thompson on 4 April 1939, in Teignmouth, Devon, Thompson's musical journey began at the age of 13 when he crafted his first bass from a tea chest. By 16, he was performing professionally in Soho clubs. His early career included a stint with Alexis Korner's Blues Incorporated and a notable tour with Roy Orbison in the 1960s.

Founding Pentangle and Musical Legacy

In 1967, Thompson co-founded Pentangle, a groundbreaking group that fused British folk with jazz, blues and psychedelia. Their 1969 album Basket of Light remains a landmark. Beyond Pentangle, Thompson's versatility led him to collaborate with a diverse array of artists, including Kate Bush, John Martyn, Roy Orbison, Nick Drake, Richard Thompson, Peter Gabriel, Talk Talk, and June Tabor. His contributions also extended to the theme for the TV show Thunderbirds.

Personal Life and Final Years

Thompson's enduring influence was marked by his distinctive playing style and collaborative spirit. In 1990, he converted to Islam, reflecting his personal growth and introspection. His final recording was a Christmas album with Jacqui McShee, symbolically reuniting him with his Pentangle roots.

Tributes and Remembrance

Musicians and fans alike mourn the loss of a true innovator. Peter Gabriel described Thompson as “one of the most delightful human beings you could ever spend time with,” highlighting his generous nature and profound impact on those around him.

Thompson is survived by his wife, Sylvia, and their son, Dan Junior. His legacy endures through his extensive discography and the indelible mark he left on the world of music
