Plugin Piracy Thread

For example, I made a lot of cool automations to not miss out on nice variations of a technique or the ability to optimally compare a tweak side by side.

Many actions would lay down a number of layer comps, for example. I could then quickly move trough them with a side button on my mouse. With another button I could clear up all the ones I didn't pick and move on. I love to nerd out on that for the fun of it and a lot of that surely would be commercially viable, but I knew people would trial it too long... -- haha! ;) So much work involved with all of that... (getting a web shop, manuals, legal agreements, ...)
Variations of what technique? What kinds of things were you doing that used this layer comp? Can you not simply describe what was being achieved with all of this?

I don't mean to dismiss you but it comes across as a nice way to spend some time tinkering on something, is that right? Like randomally hacking away at python scripts or website creation just to see if you can do it.

We've gone deep into the rabbit hole of justifying why using hacked photoshop is justifiable, I still don't see why. if you just used a crack version "because you didnt want to pay for it" that's a perfectly acceptable answer, own it. But I'm failing to see a real world justification here.

But sure there are.
I may not even start up a DAW for years but then become empassioned and discover some thing that I want to own.

I change a passion for hobbies every few months. I may be into Photoshop for 3 to 10 months then be into something else for 3 to 12 months. I prefer my "trials" to be ready when I return ;) Sorry to be honest.

Anyone who claims to be a clean sheet in all aspects of their life is most probably a big liar...

Sounds like you need to try one of the hundreds of different free/OSS solutions that accommodate such a purchase (or lack there of) plan.

On a side note with TV / Movies.

With the massive balkanization of the giant Media conglomerates, most if not all "wanted" TV shows and movies are now locked behind increasingly expensive Streaming Service paywalls which are all owned and controlled by 3 or 4 massive global corporate entities ... and not only have streaming prices skyrocketed .. but they have also now introduced ad's in all but the highest tiers.

Even "regular" pay-tv has or is losing a lot of its stuff ..... all they increasingly do is "host" a link to the Streaming service and get a small "kickback" for each referral.

Result ?

A massive increase in TV Show and Movie Piracy in the last 12+ months and its showing no signs of slowing down.

Is this legal ? Clearly not.

Is it completely and utterly understandable. %100 Yes.

Well, any techniques of course. Do you like playing with contrast? Lay down 5 contrast variations (can be different techniques) so you can jump through those choices and pick an obvious better direction instead of tweaking (you can still tweak further if you have time or are all-knowing expert of course). I used many "stops" in actions and had interactions like these where I decide and continue. I had dozens of sub-actions with scripts in them. I liked to do complicated stuff quickly with minimal but important interaction. It IS very practical if you don't know exactly what you want -- I find that is maybe the hardest thing of all... I would rather know what I want and how to do it than to use 40 main action directions... But the results are so fun. Even Dan said it is important to make variations and pick the best.

Yes and no. I'm not a guy that will show you galleries of my work (not to say it would be awful). For me, the actions/scripts ARE very practical and allow me to quickly amaze myself on a fairly continual basis. They are not cheap one-trick ponies -- they are advanced in many ways and have interaction.

Where are you getting that? I said I have a legal sub (soon after the sub system came out).
A crack comes in if they don't keep a version available that still runs the old style scripts or plugins (should I even get glasses and pursue it further).

They took away an Illustrator version in the past for which I had a kind of expensive plugin to do vinyl cutting (part of my job at the time, though not very often). Because they did that I would have to buy an expensive update for my plugin -- that's crazy to me, esp. cos I didn't use it much. That's where cracks come in, ideally. I think it's disgusting they force you to use a later version while you payed for one that works.

So many have a passion for PS scripts that I hope they will keep a working one available. Haven't read the forum in years on that...

I'd say for anyone with a "normal life," generally, trial periods are way too short...

Agree! I downloaded the FAS Icons demo plugin but it is only seven days! I have to plan my whole life now because they only give 7 days!!! What is the logic on only that few days? Doesn’t make sense to me!

I think this is an attempt at humor, but I'm not quite certain that it is.

I once bought a tool from a company who had a 30 days money-back guarantee, no-questions-asked policy, knowing full-well I was going to use it the one-time I needed it, then return it. And not feel bad about it because they had that policy.

Maybe a month later, I needed it again, and decided to buy it and keep it this time. Yet the one I grabbed had obviously been previously returned, due to the tape on the box, (by me of course.) I asked if I could get a discount because it was used, and they gave it to me.

And I felt icky afterwards. Just not enough to give them their discount back. And honestly, other than a few stolen cassette tapes from Sears long ago, I don't do this kind of thing. But in those instances, my morals didn't prevail.

But what do you say to someone who has the knowledge to steal IP, and has absolutely NO misgivings whatsoever about doing so? They don't even feel the need to justify it. Just, hey if I can do it, why not?

WHAT is the "thing" that makes it not right, if it benefits you?

This question may be getting into a deeper area than the OT is, but it's a question I've often wondered what the reasoning is, for others. (I know my own reasons.)

When it comes to plugins/software I pirated stuff when I was a kid because I was dumb enough to think having the top of the line tools would make me better at engineering or make writing music better. Turns out getting good with simple tools is what makes buying the advanced ones worthwhile. If you barely know how a compressor works you definitely don’t need a super awesome vintage modeled with extras one and it definitely won’t make nonsense music better.

BTW, an "ethic crack user" in large groups will talk favorably about a software he loves anytime he can honestly do so -- I feel that is "beyond invaluable" and will help create sales for sure. There could be kinder thinking from devs towards this... ;)

I did enjoy such a kind company once (not gonna name them). I warned that their "demo" was the actual plugin! They thankfully offered me any and all Photoshop plugins I would want from them. Sadly, I had purchased most of them already... ;P
I also feel you deserve to receive a software if you've spent hours reporting bugs for a $40-60 plugin.

Now we understand your username. You totally broke into their warehouse didn't you?

Honest question to everyone arguing piracy is bad... And I do agree, btw. It's stolen IP, isn't it?

So, how do you justify being cool with profiling in general without making piracy look sort of ok?

:sofa

Jesus man the public cracked usage defending is wild. I now see why individuals and companies need to take a harder line on things.

It’s giving the payment in exposure vibes all over again

Too black 'n' white for me...
It's like the saying, "You can't polish a turd!" (in Photoshop). Especially with some knowledge you definitely can for many -- now more than ever probably (I'm on pause since two or three years ago).

You wanted a topic with everyone agreeing with you who did not even dare to state your initial stance? ;)

At least I'm honest in claiming I've been "50/50," so to speak -- which is a lot more honest than all the supposedly "clean sheets" here.
I might be too if I had your kinda money ;)
There are also types of people. Some are genuinely happy to be minimalist -- what if you were another type? You really can't tell what you would do... (I'll leave room for exceptions)

Some justifications are better than others. If I can guarantee you as a CEO to make 3 sales because of my hype, you wouldn't offer me something? Again, the problem is how to check for it or setting up all that stuff... It is after all a technique that is used in some forms sometimes. It's just awkward to officially allow that thinking for crack users -- I understand that.
