Peavey 6505 mh (and now it's kinda a NAD; oops)

Anyone have one of these? I've been looking into them a little lately. I do NOT plan on buying one; I'm just a little curious about them.

It seems the rhythm channel has footswitchable crunch mode? That's pretty cool. Especially so since the 120w heads can't even do that.

I had the Classic 20 MH. Footswitch functionality looks similar: it has two buttons and the function depends on which jack you plug it into on the amp. The 6505 can switch channel/crunch, or plug into the other jack for reverb/loop. Not sure if you can connect 2 footswitches at once and control everything. I never noticed the 6505 mini has reverb until just now.

Let us know how you like it when yours comes in. 😉

Eh, I had one, then I bought the invective MH which I liked better for the cleans it provided with gain. It was kind of a one trick pony that the EVH line probably does better (but I have yet to buy one so idk for sure)

Yeah I didn't realize it had reverb either.

I was pretty close to emailing my SW rep a few minutes ago but I was able to resist. 😬

The Invective MH is a better amp.
I was originally thinking that too because of the Invective's features. But IF I was buying one of these (I AM NOT!! Please don't make me) the gate and boost are completely unnecessary because I could dial those up more to my liking in the VP4 anyway. And although I think the Invective clean might be a bit better, it seems like the 6505 is a bit more versatile in terms of gain? The rhythm channel seems to have a nice range on it with the crunch switch taking it from clean to crunch quite nicely. The tight switch on the Invective seems to be too close in gain between having it on and off?

Lunchbox wise the MT-15v2 looks great, I love my Ironball SE isn't super cheap but I love it for the format. The Syn 20IR is also awesome with a lot more features too, these other MH's feel too limited to me but cheaper so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The Syn 20IR does seem pretty cool.

You can use two switches at once. Or you can build/buy a four button switch. I have a 4 button for mine.

If you like 5150s (and we know you do) and you like mini amps it's a superb little amp... Nearly perfect little "Studio" metal head. Don't see how the Invective could be much "better"... I don't need a built-in gate or TS. I'd rather use my own personal gear for those parts of the signal chain.

I don't use mine much anymore as I have the 6505 module for my Synergy rig which is my go to these days...

Will not sound/feel like a big bottle 50W+ amp but as long as your expectations are realistic, it is a great 'little' amp that is super cheap on the used market.

Anyway, really good mini amp for the $$. A few cons/trade offs:
  • It's not particularly loud for a 20W tube amp. I suspect its output is overrated in terms of wattage. F.ex. I have an Orange Brent Hinds Terror that is rated 15W and it actually seems louder than the PV
  • The analog cab sim is criminally bad and cannot be defeated on the XLR out.
  • Only comes w/ a two button FS but wants 4.
  • Will probably inspire you to shop for 120W amps.
But that's about it.

Damn, I figured people would be asking YOU about them!
Haha! You do know me well, Drew. It's one of the 5150 family I haven't tried. Strangely enough I actually haven't tried any of the mini heads and also haven't tried the 100 Stealth or 100 EL34 either. People to ask me somewhat regularly about the 50w heads--I've loved those things.

I had the 6505MH and the Invective MH and I'm not sure I'd consider the Invective "better." More versatile, definitely, but the 6505MH gets a pretty convincing OG 5150 sound. I sold mine because I got an EVH Iconic 40 and the MH's low-end punch just couldn't compare. Voicing wise though, they were very close.

I had a 6505MH when they first came out and one of my buddies was just telling me that he still thinks it was the best recorded tone I ever got. Definitely more cutting and searing mids and highs than I usually get with a nice kerrang to it!

Wellllll.....shit. This wasn't really the plan, but here we are. Popped up locally for $300. 🤷🏾‍♂️

Don't lie, this was the plan all along :rofl
It definitely was not! I just thought it was interesting that the crunch was footswitchable. And then my dumbass watched a few videos about it. And then a thread on SSO (which I almost never visit anymore) reminded me how much I love the 5150/6505 tone.
