nnnnghhhhhh I want a 5150III

Owned both and I wouldn't buy an OG 5150 again. The most sterile amp I have ever played through. The 6505+ OTOH was pretty nice for the Brootz.

How can that be? Aren't they basically the same circuit/amp with just an added gain stage in the 6505+? :idk

You think the Peavey 5150 sounds “sterile?”

Welp that’s definitely the first time I’ve ever heard anybody use that word to describe that amp.

I can bet you haven't. I've heard it said a bunch of times so dont bother trying to stir the pot.

I thought the 5150 II was brighter than the 5150 when I had them.

I can kinda see what Bob is saying but to me I'd view it as more surgical. they are really tight amps and can get too high in the treble quick.

But I love them 😀

I've owned the 50w EL34, and currently own the 50 6L6 and the 100w 6L6.

The 50 watters were near identical. The green channels were very slightly different, and the blue channel was looser on the EL34.

The 50w 6L6 vs the 100w, the 100 has less gain, but sounds fuller. That said, you can get 95% of the way there with the depth knob or whatever its called on the back of the 6L6. That, combined with it being friendlier volume-wise AND the fact it has more useable gain makes the 50w 6L6 the winner overall for me.

The 100w technically sounds a touch better, but the 6L6 is the better amp overall. I do have the 100w for sale locally, but I wont be mad if it never sells :D

Some call the 5153 "poor man SLOs", and they do sound pretty close. The SLO 30 I played was different enough to warrant owning both though, if I ever get the funds lol.

But yeah, the 5153s are great amps, more versatile than most give them credit for. They also have an inherent frequency-focus in the mids that you either love or hate. Most love it.

Yup. Easily the most recorded Amp in the History of Modern Metal and Thrash. It's never not been tight.

Well again I'm not going to argue with anyone who wasnt in the room with me. I wasnt into tube rolling and working on my own stuff at the time so for all I know mine was biased cold or had a bad tube in it. I base my opinions on what my experience is with something no matter what it is. Lots of folks love Les Paul guitars and I think they generally suck. Maybe it's cos the one I bought for nearly 4k was a piece of $hit.
