This was really a treat!
My buddies who do the tributes are doing this with him, Mike the guitarist and Paulo the vocalist (same dudes who did the Ryche/Dokken tributes recently). They’re doing Maiden’s upcoming setlist as a way to get Nicko ready for the tour. He discusses his health issues and why he’s doing this in this speech-
I’m not a huge Maiden fan, but that was fun as hell. I wish I grabbed more pics from the stage but I went to help my buddy Jeff get the previous band’s gear off and touched the kit! Jeff and I are carrying a cab to the side of the stage when I hear “Lit-el Jeff-ree be careful with that! We need you to make us sound good tonight, mate!” and I look up, Nicko is standing right next to me, slaps me on the shoulder and says “Thanks, mate, that cabinet weighs more than he does!” (Jeff is a stick) then I look at Jeff after he walks away and I’m like, “That dude is no different than Lars or Bonham as far as I’m concerned. What a fucking trip”
I’ve got a few vids, not sure if I got any full songs or not. Mike was using his Helix/ISP/4x12 rig. I don’t think I caught Nicko’s band introduction, but man, I got choked up in that. He gets to Mike and says “And this man, this man is like having Adrian and Dave in one person, he’s become a dear friend and if not for him Iron Maiden would be on drummer #5 right now!” then he gets to Paulo, “If this man were around after Blaze Bailey, you’d all be singing his songs!”
The other guitarist was playing a Strat with single coils, I can’t say that was a benefit to the overall sound because it that twangy, Strat single coil bridge pickup sound for all his rhythm parts. His leads sounded fucking great and he could rip, though!
I’m not sure how many of these gigs he’s doing or if there are any outside Florida, but I’d definitely go see it if you can!
