The backstory on this one goes back, many years ago, when dinosaurs roamed the earth (almost, anyway)...

When I was 16, I saved enough money to go to Glenside Music (you Philly peeps who go to shows in Glenside might know it was a few doors down from the Keswick Theater) and plunk down 75 bucks for what was a mid-Sixties Epiphone Coronet- a single chrome P-90, batwing headstock, weighed practically nothing. I played that guitar like I stole it, and it was in my possession until the late Eighties, when it pretty much fell apart. Loved that guitar. Here's a pic of young me playing Coronet 1, after I did the typical stupid thing and stripped the cherry finish off it... I did put a pretty cool Bugs Bunny sticker on it, though.

I had my 72nd birthday a week or so ago, and I'd been peeping around the various gear sites for...something. I'd just sold a good amount of gear and had a couple grand to play with, so I figured I'd at least buy a little something with that dough. On Tuesday night I was poking around Reverb when I saw this.

It's a 2022 reissue of the 1960 Coronet - a bit different than my first one, minus the batwing headstock and chrome P-90 cover. But man, when it came in today and I took it out of the case, the feel was pretty damn close to the old Coronet I remembered. I plugged it in and gave it a few minutes of play before the wife and I headed for the Met, and from all indications it's a good one. The P-90 sounded good both clean and dirty, and is surprisingly quiet for a single coil pickup.

I'll spend more time with it tomorrow morning, but the first impression is I bought myself a pretty kickass guitar. Sometimes nostalgia buys turn out to be pretty good.
