I tried to be objective. I listened intently for something, really anything in that halftime show, that would explain what people see.

I didn't find shit. Ultimately, it's not supposed to be understood by Gen x, I 'spose? :idk

To me, quite possibly the worse I've ever heard, but again, just my opinion.

Didn't watch because Eww sports.

My take. The rap artists that are huge enough that should have already done the halftime show had their heyday in the 80s. Run DMC, Beasties, LL; all of those are headline superbowl acts. Dr. Dre and crew were :love here years ago. I first heard Kendrick on that last Dre album and I didn't like him at all. He has a fast flow but his tone is gross to my ears :idk

I might dig it up on YT and see if I was wrong

Just watched it. For my tastes; big fat nope. Like I said; quick flow. Dude is skilled in that regard. But that tone, oof and the songs themselves; yuck. Performance itself was good visually and I'm always down for more Samuel Jackson \m/ Maybe he can do a spoken word piece next year instead :sofa

I can't wait for Hip Hop to experience its inevitable and imminent 80s Hair Metal moment.

It's as bleak and dead and worn out from its own cliches as Hair Metal became. It happens.

You gonna get Grunged sooner or later Hip Hop.

I basically just want drill and mumble rap to get grunged :cop I'm down for the 80-2000s stuff :love

One of my boys really dig him. The messages seem big from what I could glean (mainly from SLJ's narration). If I'm listening to lightning fast rapping; I'm going to go TechN9ne :satan

Wasn't down with the halftime at all. I'm not against rap or hiphop, I just didn't like that style last night. He was hard to understand too. It was missing some energy, kind of like the Chiefs. :grin

In all fairness; I am a bit more restricted in my rap tastes than I am rock or metal. So I will admit that up front I am not the target audience for that particular style.

Same. I tend to like the rap that has a bit more music and melody throughout too.

My favorite thing now is to find those hidden gems that didn't catch my attention back in the day. There is a LOT of good stuff that just fell by the wayside because I spent most of my musical bandwidth chasing metal bands.

The halftime show was the best halftime show I've ever seen.

I mean, it's the only halftime show I've ever seem because I watch real football, but it was ace.

Dam ! I thought this group would be different to TGP.

We're probably a little more forgiving? But still old :grin

I actually fell asleep during that half time show, it was that boring to me! Then again, the game was a yawn as well by halftime!! My first exposure to Rap was Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five when they first pioneered that genre. Although everybody wants to point to "White Lines" (which is about NOT doing blow), "New York New York" and "The Message" are both exceptional Rap songs IMO!!! And I have covered them both (horribly, that is what the links lead to, you've been warned) ;~)) Snoop and Dre have done some killer stuff, but much of the messaging of their material rubbed me the wrong way, though the beats and production are undeniably awesome. Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul also had some very good material in the 90's IMO as well! And don't ever forget Wuf Ticket wit "Ya' Mama"!!!! As for anything that has come out in the past 30 years, I have no clue.

The Message is a classic. I get your point on the messaging in gangster rap but that was a MAGNET to my metal brain. Still is :satan De La Soul and Tribe were great for that positive spin on things and experts at their craft.

It's funny how the genre started out with some of the most over-enunciated stuff ever but morphed over the years to the opposite end of that spectrum with the mumble stuff :wat
