New Friedman Brit 50

The Friedman amp naming convention and the price point of their amps have been two factors that have kept me from buying them. If I want a Marshall, there are a bunch of Marshall-like options for fractions of the price, including actual bond-fide Marshalls. I’m not sure what Friedman does with their amps that really sets them apart from other Marshall clones.

I’m not saying they don’t make good products, just they don’t appeal to me for a couple of important reasons.

They have a sound, it's heavier and higher gain with more low end than a Marshall. Friedman started modding Marshalls and people dug the sounds and then he started his brand which has been incredibly successful. Yeah if you want a JCM 800 or Super Lead then it makes no sense to buy a Friedman. These amps are more competing with Bogner, Soldano, and other boutique amps.

I don't get the naming convention complaints, nothing released in the last decade has weird names. Even then the entire history of rock and roll has been anything but prudish. Friedman amps are heavily inspired by the 80's Sunset Strip sound...those guys weren't choir boys by any stretch...

I wouldn’t be surprised if Friedman started naming amps like that due to his participation at HRI leading up to him launching the Friedman brand. That was pretty much the language we spoke all the time. :rofl

100%. I mean it was a website called Huge Racks Inc...between that, Harmony Central Amp Forum, and Rig Talk, it was not family friendly!

How many times is he going to keep making this amp?

How does the naming convention even apply to this amp or any other amp he’s released the past couple of years? If you don’t like the sound, price or just specifically Dave Friedman himself, fair I get that, but it’s not like guitar based rock music, guitars, amps, gear, etc…. isn’t full of innuendo. Maybe not specifically you, but I find it funny that people have a problem with an amp name but perfectly fine learning a song called “Hot For Teacher” or “She Shook Me All Night Long”.

Well, Friedman is a boutique brand, so as far as price point, they're not even trying to be the cheapest. You can't really blame a company for not being something they're not even trying to be. Their prices are aligned to the pricing of other boutique makers, I think. The boutique market is not for everyone, but it's not even meant to be for everyone. That's what "boutique" means.

If you just need a high gain Marshall tone, a DSL will do for about $700. That's not what Friedman is competing against though, it's a different market altogether. It's kind of like the guy in an Armani suit, he didn't buy it because he "needed a suit", he bought it because he wanted that specific brand. And for everyone else in the room, he's just a guy in a suit. But it was worth something to him and it fits his budget so... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Boutique brands are not exactly trying to compete in price against mass produced brands.

As for the names, meh... I don't love them but they're not a deal breaker. It seems like he stopped using them on new products though, "Brit 50" is a pretty standard name for this type of amp.

I feel the same as you. Nice guys, but SW is pretty high profile, I'm sure they can find some more "accurate" guys to demo some things.

Either that, or Friedman needs to have an agreement that SW only uses vids from say, Pete Thorn for their amps, or something.
Yeah, pretty much every Friedman artist/endorser would be better qualified to demo that amp. They should have flown one of them in to do the demo. A ticket to Ft Wayne can't be that expensive to be a deal breaker :rofl

I still feel like if I am wanting a Marshall but not a Marshall vibe; I'd want to hit up a Bogner instead of a Friedman
I love Bogner amps but I think they're further from Marshall than Friedman is. They have a smoother, darker texture to them. Which is awesome in their own right. I was just listening to my old Uberschall Twin Jet clips this morning. I miss that amp.

Forum narrative here: “Friedmans are too dark and bassy and lose the essence of what makes a great Marshall. I’ll go for a Bogner instead”.

There are tons of Marshall circuits that are flubbier/thicker than a Friedman, especially the newer Friedman circuits which tend to lean more bright+aggressive than the older ones.

I love a Bogner but they’re voiced right on the cusp of what is way too dark. Friedmans are bang in the middle with enough control to take it in any direction without going weird

If we're being honest; I just think a Bogner is going to be a cooler amp :bag :rofl
