NDSP Quad Cortex

It’s a fine line there because it’s totally legit debate and discussion about the pros and cons of a device but it tends to drown out any productive discussion about using or enjoying the device. And that has a chilling effect.

It’s almost like we need separate threads for the pros and cons.

“Why your modeler sucks: the Quad Cortex edition” and then it’s just a pile-on slug fest.

But I can’t think of the corresponding positive thread. I wouldn’t want the rainbows and bunnies only BS. Maybe a thread for users and prospective users, with a friendly reminder to keep the bickering and heavy criticism to the negative thread. But that feels cheesy too.

Another hard part is you don’t want to only section it off to the gear rants or thunderdome, it’d be nice to have those in line. It would be neat to have a Reddit style tagging in the title.

This was actually right along the idea I had and used the QC threads as an example; early on we did (still do, I’m sure) have 2 different QC threads, one for general conversation and one for us to lambast NDSP. One was in the Digital/Modeling sub and the other was in the Gear Rants or Thunderdome. Hell, JT’s OG Non-Owner’s Thread was basically doing that exact thing before this was a forum.

It’d require a bit of self-policing, which is a bit of a crapshoot to begin with, but maybe after a while members can suggest to the more rant-y ones, “Hey, there’s a thread for that”. I just don’t want it to be a thing where us mods have to go in and move several pages of a thread to the rant threads.

I used my own posts in the Kemper MK2 thread as an example, between Orvillian and I, we’re drowning out any potential enthusiasm that Kemper fans could even entertain with our gripes about Kemper and then it ends up a circular discussion on aliasing and blah blah.

Part of making this place was to ensure people had a place they could gripe away with legitimate concerns, without the kind of censorship that happens at TGP or manufacturer socials, but it was just as much formed to have a place we could laugh and have a good time. And also, it leaves the companies the option of participating in a neutral thread instead of having to avoid a thread because they can’t say anything about what they’re working on or simply don’t have any updates but still want to join in on the discussion.

I think there's levels to this. Universal Audio's "We can't say anything about future features or products" are useless statements when people just want to know if they would ever consider a feature or improvement. By comparison Digital Igloo or FractalAudio are able to talk about their stuff even if they aren't revealing what's next.

NDSP started off by answering people's questions on TGP, even if they were very much lies ("should be easy" or "soon") but have increasingly just gone silent online.

For sure, my only goal in the way of company’s posting here is say Fractal or Line 6 are fixing something or have a timeline they can’t share, sometimes you get even just one person who won’t stop railing on that one thing and it’d be a bummer to have guys like Cliff or Eric just not post at all due to something like that. The dual-threads would give them the option to still post while seeing but not engaging in the railing.

I’d shit an actual gold brick if NDSP ever showed up here.

It's not just here. NDSP doesn't seem to show up anywhere save for their official forum/Discord, and even then...it's not clear who's official or who's a rando that they gave mod abilities to.

That's just their way, and I've said all I have to say about that. I just look at the fact that both Cliff and DI hang here comfortably as proof positive that you're striking a good balance already.

I have a hunch that if NDSP were in good standing with all their customers they’d be a LOT more social, but due to Doug’s Oprah-show history and the current state of things, I don’t question for a second why they don’t say a word in public anymore.

Crazy enough, I find myself really hoping and wishing they get all of that together. First, it's what stalwarts like @mbenigni deserve. Any of their customers, really. But second, we all benefit from them or any other modeling maker being successful, bringing new customers into modeling and also pushing the platforms of our choice to compete harder.

It is perturbing to see people on their official socials getting shut down for asking for communication. There’s a point I can understand where the lack of progress conversation can run it’s course, but when people are just asking a basic “Hey, can anyone from NDSP just acknowledge you have a customer base?” and because they haven’t kept up with NDSP’s vanishing act from from their own socials, they get chewed out by a mod or treated like they’re annoying for asking for basic communication.

Go figure, I went to Discord to see if I could find an example and the first thing I see is someone questioning NDSP’s communication and this-

Assclowns.

They do try really hard to keep things on track (which truly, kudos to them, but yeah they are too heavy handed for me)
That Discord format is really the worst for meaningful conversations, there's a reason it's used a ton for streaming and gaming activities - it's like a live conversation that you can't be bothered to repeat what you've said

It’d require a bit of self-policing
This is the main issue and isn't likely to be resolved. People don't tend to do this in general but especially not on the internet lol. But heavy-handed moderation sucks too if not done in a conscientious way.

Part of making this place was to ensure people had a place they could gripe away with legitimate concerns, without the kind of censorship that happens at TGP or manufacturer socials, but it was just as much formed to have a place we could laugh and have a good time.
For the most part this is how I'd describe this forum. But the overwhelming negativity towards NDSP as a company in this particular thread makes the thread a lot less fun, useful, interesting, etc. for some of us QC owners. There should absolutely be both positivity and negativity in a thread about any particular modeler. I just wish it was more about the modeler than the company.

And also, it leaves the companies the option of participating in a neutral thread instead of having to avoid a thread because they can’t say anything about what they’re working on or simply don’t have any updates but still want to join in on the discussion.
NDSP couldn't participate on this forum to any meaningful extent. The negativity towards them runs too deep at this point. I actually understand both sides of that.

I actually thought the other day "man the QC thread is a chiller spot than the Kemper 2 right now" lol

Lol. I think I've only ventured into that thread once. Yeah it was a shitshow of people ripping on that thing.
Honestly that's often what happens with any product (outside fractal 😂). But even then they aren't totally immune here.

It's just where people are on the Internet these days. Obviously nothing is ever perfect but boy do we like to focus on the negatives.

The Helix Stadium thread started out absolutely positive but then went down the negative path after a few days. It's since rebounded to normalcy.

I'm not trying to negate your opinion. I think the QC gets the worst of it here. But that is mostly because how this forum came to be and honestly, what NDSP has done themselves. However, the QC is wildly popular, has a great sales record, and is very good sounding.

Not putting the responsibility on you but feel free to post QC pics or clips of patches you've been working on etc. I think that might help add some positive news and user experience to break up the negativity

I appreciate your willingness to experiment on these things! Totally agree with everything you wrote.

Agreed on all points.

@mbenigni sent his back for repair and that discussion was useful, informative, and interesting (imo). It had a positive result which made me smile; I was happy they got him sorted. That kind of stuff does break up the negativity so your point is well taken. However while I like to read stuff about the QC (and Fractal and L6 and Mesas and ...) I don't feel like I have all that much useful stuff to contribute. I don't just want to post something even I don't find vey interesting just to break up the negativity--I feel like that would be a bit disingenuous.
