NAD: Christmas Mystery Edition

Very nice! Was this the Bassman you were talking about? Nice score and great wife \m/
Yeah! I love the amp but I’m also bummed that I didn’t get to go to atomic! I’m keeping an eye out for an opportunity to get out there.

I don’t think they mark the output but that’s a 4 ohm jack on the back. I redplated mine by hooking up a 16 ohm cabinet.

AB165 is probably my least favorite Bassman variant, just wondering why you’d convert a channel to that one. My favorite mod is adding a Mids control.

Very cool gift!
I’m not totally sold on the AB165 which is why I want to live with this amp a bit as-is. It might just get a PPIV master on it and something more interesting on the bass channel.

You don’t even have to add a hole to the chassis. Either use the polarity switch hole or one of the pots on the bass channel.

Congrats on the cool amp, brother.

Thanks, I might be coming back to pick your brain later.
My 1967 is a blackface.

I replaced the auxiliary power outlet with an IEC AC Jack and that is my mids control in the ground switch hole.

Yours is much nicer than mine. I had to replace so many resistors and caps that it made everyone poop themselves over at rag-talk.

That’s a beautiful amp. Love the blackface amps.

I assumed that would be AB165 stock. Did you do something else other than the mid knob (great idea)?

I’m sorry. It was the Marshall forum that crapped all in their undies over me repairing my amp. I didn’t mean to malign rag-talk but they deserve it.

I made a few small changes like lowering the grid resistors on the input stage.

Had a few more minutes to plug in again tonight. The tone is so nice but the volume is absolutely punishing. This amp will for sure be getting a post phase inverter master volume at a minimum.

I love what I’m getting out of the normal channel and want to hear it cranked with the master before making any other changes.

I have no use for the bass channel. Def contemplating mods there or maybe even just making it another normal channel and having the deep switch add in another gain stage.

That's some Good Wifing there. Congrats, E! :beer

I have a '68 Bassman. Kept it over a '65 I had at one time, too.

I gigged it for a bit as a Pedal Platform and used to run a stereo pedal last and then
into both of the Inputs, and then I would blend the brightness with the depth and
dark of the other. That's fun. :chef

I am also a freak and used the Lo Inputs. :idk

Hard to find attenuation that you can run at 4 ohms, though. I wish more people
considered vintage Fenders when it came to attenuation devices.

I also sag my voltage out of the wall downward.

All kinds of cool things you can do with those amps without necessarily having to mod
them. Jumpering the channels. Running an OD below unity and then cranking the amp
up more. I'll always have my Bassman. Lord willing.

Merry XMas! :cheers

Looks killer sitting atop that beautiful Super! Jeez!

That is such a great Christmas present! Congrats!

A good friend of mine recently had Jens Kruse track down a Bassman head to mod. He wanted one channel that could do the brown sound, and I’m not sure what he did with the other. I have only heard it on my friend’s videos, but he is stoked with how it came out.

I’m not an expert but my current understanding is people primarily leave the normal (guitar) channel pretty much alone and then make use of some of the unused triodes in the bass channel to do Marshall/Tweed/Trainwreck mods there for gainer tones. Definitely interested in that approach.

If you use the amp with an AB box you can end up with a poor man’s channel switcher.
