Chuck Billy disproves your thesis.

You have Chuck (who is a GOAT). Then you have Eric A.K. who is maybe a little lesser know and more melodic?

Beyond that, speaking strictly of thrash; most vocalists don't fall into that skill level. Look at the German stuff. Schmier, Angelripper and Mille all have acquired taste vocals. I think Angelripper is the best out of these 3 by far with Mille being wayyyyy behind to my ears. Those guys definitely fall into the character voice category. A lot of thrash tried to get replacement vocalists to commercialize things (Coburn Pharr on Annihlator/Never Neverland; dude on the Whiplash album who's name I can't remember). Better upgrades in quality but the music itself ended up being a downgrade.

You have someone who kind of falls in between like Phil from Sacred Reich who can do kind of both sides of the thrash/not quite thrash thing. But when they lightened up; the overall quality of the songs took a downturn.

Do Joey Belladonna and John Bush count?

Ironically, I had a massive Metallica phase as a teenager (as many do) but always wrote of mega death. I saw a MD tribute opening for a friends band a few years ago and was like… holy shit…. I’ve been missing out megadeath is fucking awesome

Slayer!

Sorry, someone had to. I was into Motorhead, Discharge, GBH and Venom beforehand.
Slayer was AWESOME. One of my absolute faves. Until they weren't. Once Tom started yelling on every song; good lord ( :satan ) shut up already :rofl

My choice may have an emotional component. See, when I got out of high school I traveled the country. I went from Pennsylvania to Florida and then to Colorado. The ultimate goal was to make it to LA and join a metal band but by the time we got to Denver, I was way out of money. One night I was out walking on the empty streets and I found $4. I was going to buy some food but saw a record store that sold used stuff. I came across this for $2.50.

I didn't even know they had a new album out. I took it back to my friend's apartment and this album blew me away.

I still bought some snacks for me and my friend with the $1.50 that I had left.

I hope Columbia Records doesn't demand that I return this. :rofl

I didn’t realise this as a teenager, but Megadeth are superior and it’s not even close. I was a fool for thinking otherwise. Hetfield is class, but there’s so many bands I’d put ahead of Metallica.
I still dig the first 4 albums though.

Metallica albums ranked in order

Master of Puppets
Ride the Lightning
And Justice for All
Kill ‘em All
The rest go somewhere down here. Don’t care.

This one was really difficult for me. I am a big fan of both bands.
