Is the Vypyr still the best practice amp for metal?

My old Vypyr 60 seems to have died (almost certainly because I modded it a few years ago).

I want something decent for the living room and with built in effects (especially delay and reverb). Think I’m just gonna grab a Vypyr X2. The other thoughts were a Katana or a Catalyst, but I’ve had both in the past (previous versions) and not really enjoyed the high gain tones.

Vypyr has a ton of features and effects that I definitely don’t give a crap about (Sitar? Electric violin? Anybody care about that kinda crap anymore?) but it seems to have the basics down well enough?

Can you adjust or turn off the noise gate on the newer ones? You could not on the originals. It drove me nuts and caused me to get rid on my Vypyrs. I still have the 1x8 combo kicking around though. I always thought there was something a little special, tone wise about the 1x8 compared to the others.

I dunno. There’s an app but I’m not sure about if it allows any gate control. I should know in an hour or two lol.

I have the Tube 60 also (actually have had 3). I never noticed the problem with the gate 🤷🏾‍♂️
If you have a gained up sound, and hold a chord or note the gate will shut off the signal abruptly rather than letting the sound decay naturally. At least mine is like that. The amp itself sounds killer and is loud af.

Yeah the tube 60 is outstanding. I wish mine didn’t die on me. I might be able to fix it. Will need to give it a go.

I did get the Vypyr X2. It’s doing what I wanted it to do. Gives me some good metal tones, some good clean tones, and stuff in between that’s decent enough. Has decent reverb and delay onboard which is pretty much all I really needed from it.

On the gate, I haven’t noticed any issues so far, other than it has one tha kicks in at some point but it’s kinda useless if you have a gained up amp along with the TS (for example). I don’t feel like it really needs the TS for living room use tbh.

Interestingly if you turn the pre gain all the way down on the 6505+ model’s red channel, it’s still a very gained up sound. So it’s not like the real amp at all in that regard. I wouldn’t expect it to be just like the real amp obviously, but that kind of thing is pretty strange imo. I haven’t checked the other amps for that particular thing but I doubt it’s just that amp model. I’ll go back to that when I have more time.

The control app is pretty weak tbh. It does control the amp so it’s fine in that regard, but it does have some weird quirks. Selecting presets is kinda annoying for example. I can go into more detail later if anyone cares.

Bottom line, is so far I like it because it’s fine at doing the very few tasks I need it to. I’m not sure yet if I’d actually recommend it though.

Bad night for me with the Vypyr stuff. I was able to acquire a Vypyr Tube 120 combo to try alongside the X2. I was using a 7-string and high gain tones. Both Vypyrs sounded muddy and middy and I couldn’t seem to dial any of that out to my satisfaction.

I was curious if it was just my ears being weird so I plugged into my Badlander 25 and, no, it wasn’t my ears. Of course I don’t expect the Vypyrs to sound as good as the Badlander but they just sounded straight up bad. It still could’ve just been my ears to a point I guess. I’ll have to try that again today.

I gave up on Vypyrs years ago. They couldn't keep their composure at band volumes. I have had a 60 and the big SS one, both ver.1. The 8" is decent for a practice amp, but I haven't touched it in years.
